Towing with 4.8 how to protect rear facia...

I towed with my 4.8 for the first time recently and I could not find a great way to protect the rear lower facia from the safety chain. The chain mostly rests on the painted piece and I dont want to scratch it. Any suggestions?

Do not tow with a 4.8is.

Sorry. If you choose to do it close your eyes on scraches.

Thanks, but that is not the question

For those of you that do tow, how do you protect that painted plastic...

do you have a safety cable that is coated with plastic in your part of the world as im in the uk and we use these not that i have towed with my x5 yet

I'll look for one....

Also thought about using painters tape on the facia like people who auto-x do.

How about some bungee straps to pull the chains tight?

I have towed with my 4.8is. First thing; try to have as less of chain touching the body as possible. What I did was completely wrap the chain with the soft packing foam sheet and tie with soft thread on top so that it stays in place. I had no scratches whatsoever. You can even use some soft cloth to cover the chain. Check the chain at every stop, which you will probably do anyway to check the hitch and trailer connection. Have some extra packing sheet foam handy just in case you need more.

You can also put some removable packing tape on painted bumper area.

I've used regular masking tape. Just lay a few layers across the lower lip where the chain will rub, peel it off when you're done.

Buy some Foam tubes that are used to cover roll bars in race cars. You can get it fairly cheap and in black. Just cut, about 6-8", it and tuck the chain inside it. Looks better then masking tape, etc..

I like it...

I will look for some foam.

Thanks to all that commented.
