Faulty Tank Venting Valve
 

I has the SES light come on so I took a trip to the dealer. Hooked it to the OBD while I waited. Turns out I have a faulty Tank Venting Valve. Has anyone replaced this part themselves? My fear is it is buried under the vehicle with the gas tank.

I searched on Real OEM. Here is a link to what I think might be the part but it has a different name on Real OEM, Fuel Venting Valve. I could not find any other valve on the fuel system:

If that is the part does anyone know where it would be located??

Based on the grouping within fuel injection it looks to be something similar to an idle control valve..... I bet its under the hood.... did you ask the dealer what an estimate would be to replace it labor wise?

Most likely under the vehicle in the rear near the tank. You will need to drop the underside cover to check.

In looking at the below pic there are a few things that make me think its near the intake of the engine:

1. The item that looks like a mounting plate just to the left of item 1.
2. Most emission systems vent the tank fumes into the intake of the engine to burn them, this is done in conjunction with charcoal canisters, so that your garage is not a fire hazard with the car emitting fuel vapor when parked. Think of a car as a sealed system. The only emissions related vapor are only allowed to leave the vehicle via tailpipe so that the system as a whole can be tested for "total emissions".

You will see that this pic is between the MAF and the fuel rails.

They like to keep parts grouped together by system. Fuel injection components usually don't cover pump or tank. Fuel injection is usually classified as parts mounted to the engine for the purpose of introducing fuel to be mixed with air.

In most cases, the manufacturer is required to provide extended warranty past the factory duration on Emissions related devices. You might want to ask you dealer about this..

What was the OBD code that came up?

The code according to the "Diagnosis" sheet I have is:

98 Activation, tank venting valve

I thought you had an OBD code -- that looks like a BMW system code.

Any chance your gas cap could be bad?

Sorry, I thought the OBD code was the same as the system code. Thank you for the clarification.

Nope, they checked the gas cap at the dealership.

I think you are talking about the purge valve, which is #1 on the diagram, it is easy to replace, and it is normal to get a faulty purge valve, most likely related to blown fuse inside the purge valve.
