Why is it that when I got the X5 everyone seems to want to ride my ass?

What the hell is up with that? It can be on the highway or a regular road. I always have someone riding my ass.

I do not drive slow, but I do not go extreme either.

Maybe it's because they think I am showing off by hitting the gas really hard when the light turns green. Guess they want to show that their car can beat my BMW SUV. Yay 4 them.

I am talking 2 lane roads mostly where they can go to the right lane if they want

I live in a college town and It is 100% always cars that college students usually drive.

High-end cars and even sport cars such as 350z do not do this at all. Its almost always people riding Mazda 3s, Accords and Civics.

Well, it seems that you are hogging the left lane, regardless of your speed as somebody wants to go faster.

If you are going 95 in a 45 in the left lane and someone behind you wants to go 100, you need to get out of the way into the right lane. The left lane is the passing lane.

I hate when people doing 10mph over PSL and think they can stay in left line..

Crap this happens to me all the time I swear coming up I75 in the Atlanta Metro doing 80-85 mph. Why on earth would they want to go faster than that? BTW the speed limit is 55 mph within the perimeter

The cars you mentioned are probably people THINKING they are faster than your BMW - I have shown quite a few they are wrong, even in my 3.0i.

The other thing I noticed is that they might not be as close as you think they are. I had a car one day that would not get off my arse. Finally stopped at a red light and swore they were touching me, so I got out and looked. They were further away than I thought they were. SO it may just be perception on your part.

I'm still getting used to the size of my X5... everything seems closer than it really is.....

I had to get out like 3 times yesterday when parking backwards :)

Well if I can't see their headlights in my rear view, they are following too close.

I drove on the Atlanta beltway last year. I gotta admit, people drive fast there, but the roads are very smooth and the lanes are really wide. I was doing 90-100 easily at times becasue the conditions permitted. If I were approaching you going 80-85 in the left lane, I would have flashed my brights twice and signaled left while in the passing lane.

To put things into perspective...

Why would people want to go faster than me when I am already doing extralegal speeds? The speed limit is so much lower than what I was already going. I am the pacesetter on this road, no one should want to go faster than me.

The left lane is for passing, if their is room in the slow lane, move over. Let the person past and let him get the ticket. A civic or a 3 are small sporty cars that handle well, its not up to you control speed on the highway.

I have the same experience! In the X5, one sits up high and due to the stance of the X5, I think that even if the car behind is far enough, it appears closer - kind of what the statement on the side mirror says.

for the love of god, drive on the right, and pass on the left. drivers who can't follow this basic rule of the road are one of my biggest pet peeves.

i agree. i have a friend who drives an audi TT and whenever she's in an SUV, she says that the cars behind her always look like they're much closer than when she's in her car. the rear of an suv is so much higher than a car's that headlights on the vehicle behind you move below your line of sight from the rear view mirror sooner. so, the car behind you may not really be that close though it may look like it...

I agree with the above posts. If you ever get passed on the right hand side - you need to move over to the right lane.

I thought it was a law in most states that faster traffic should be in the left lanes for passing. If this isn't a law, it should be.

As much as i try to think this way too :), there are too many idiots out there that will turn you into a road rage victim. You're better off ignoring these folks and let them pass.

I think that the traffic law in the US is all wrong. Speed within reason is not the issue. Almost everyone drives over the post limit. Going 75 or 80 on a open highway is much safer than doing 70 following a tight group of other cars, yet that single driver doing 75 is much more likely to get nailed for speeding. The person that does not let others pass should be the one getting the ticket.

people that sit in the left lane and hold up traffic need to be run off the road and summarily beaten. Right up there with the people that speed up to pass you only to slow down once they get in front of you.

We NEED to be more strict on the whole driver license process, especially when the roads are getting ever more crowded. It drives me nuts when everyone "thinks" they have the "rights" to just sit on the left lane doing road blocks. I don't care how fast you're already doing. If the right lane(s) is open...MOVE OVER! This is ESPECIALLY true on a 2-lane road!

just cuz people can pass a driving test does not mean that when that test is over they will continue to drive in a proper manner...to be honest I have lost my licence...twice...but i have never had a car accident...not to mention i am a considerate driver (signal lane changes, move over to let faster traffic by, get out of the way of emergency vehicles, etc)...licencing measures the wrong things and is not a test of ability behind the wheel of a vehicle

:iagree: Wisely spoken, but easier said than done. On another note, it's pretty funny though that you can be minding your own business out on the highway and some hero comes out of nowhere to mess with you. To me it's never been my speed being slow. It's someone just hat'in.

r6girl: yeah..I. have a lowered 325is and when I drive that car for a while and then go back to the X5...it's a totally different perspective! Once, as I pulled out of my garage, I hit the car on the driveway because I did not see it - on the X5 you sit way up -the other car was just out of the line of sight (or I am too dumb when backing up;) ) I think my wife will agree with the last point.

I must say that nothing makes me madder than when your in traffic in the third lane and the jerk behind you tried to get around you. I speed up every time!
Some people think that their are special, they need to wait and follow the traffic just like the rest of the world.

that is why I use the shoulder I am not a big fan of waiting in traffic

I understand - but, not if the guy infront is going slower than the rest of traffic just because! You know those people....then, you try to around them and they speed up. I do not mean, I want to pass everyone just to get ahead.

I find that I leave at least a car length between me and the next car, seems to be a open invitation for the jerk to try and get around. When the road is open I am more than happy to move over but when your in stop and go traffic sit back and wait your turn.

In IL, where I am, it is illegal to hog the left lane for more than a half mile...You can be fined up to 79 bucks, but I've never seen a copper go after a left lane hogger. I try not to use the far left lane for more than a mile or two. In non-peak times, I will occasionaly see a Jetta or Civic fly by at like 80mph, thinking the left lane lets them go faster than the limit...:rofl:

A lotta places have signs telling you to use the left lane for passing only, but it never works. In Canada, people always stay right and allow others to pass on the left. In upstate NY, it worked pretty well too. But around here and the NJ Turnpike? forget it. :thumbdown

I always follow the "stay right, pass left" rule when possible. However, my dad does not. Funny how he's the one that got a verbal warning up in Quebec.:rolleyes:

Around the NY Metro area no one does anthing unless something is it for them.

I agree with the rest. 10 mph over the speed limit is not a reason to stay in the left lane. If other drivers want to go faster, you need to get out of their way!

If I am looking to get my own ticket, I should have a right to do so - if you are going 85 in 55 zone in left lane and I am closing on you at 95, then move over. This is not being considerate driver, polite driver or other things - this is well trained driver that is confident of his abilities and would respect the abilities of the others. I drove on AutoStradas in northern Italy, if you stay in left lane going 180 KM/H, you should be scanning the rearview mirror for someone coming at you much faster - chances are, there will be a Porsche, Ferrari, Lambo, or an M5 flashing their lights at you at about 2 miles away. Better move over fast as they are going at over 250+ KM/H. This is just proper driver education and training, like turn signals for the lane changes, 4-ways if you are approaching a traffic jam, so the guy behind you does not rear-end you, etc... In addition to the roads' "natural" speed limit (not the legal limit artificially imposed by authorities but the limit engineered into the curves and vertical deviation of the road) every driver also has its natural "speed limit" - I could sustain 180 KM/H and occasionally reach 200 mark in a Renault in Italy on well designed roads. When I tried my X5 4.6, I raised my "personal" plank to 140 MPH, after which I started to shake (the car was still going solid and strong). Most US roads are designed around 90-100 MPH maximum. Now, I am driving in Central America, and I am moving at 30 MPH, thinking that I am blasting around town like a maniac - the roads are designed for horses not BMWs. Besides, the definition of a roadblock is different here - if you drive along and see your buddy on the other side of the road, you just stop in the left lane (if there is a left lane), talk to him while all the traffic behind scrambling for the brakes, trying to avoid you and the 2 foot-deep pothole on the right that is actually open manhole cover!!!

Having been the victim of "road rage", it is not worth it, let 'em pass. Stay right except to pass. You will also attract less interest from L.E. as they tend to aim their LIDAR and RADAR to the left lane first.
