Extreme cold weather testing of the X5!!!

Well, it's been a bit nippy the last few days! A round of beers for the guys who invented heated garages and heated seats!
Sure glad I'm going to Hawaii on Sunday! :nanana:

:scared: HOLY SH*T!!

noncom23 02-23-2007 02:42 PM

Geezz. Talk about the great white north. How does your X5 do in all that?
Or for that matter, how do you do it?

X5 in AK 02-23-2007 02:47 PM

X5 has been doing great. Brand new oil seperator and oil seperator hoses, fresh oil in everything and a heated garage. The heated garage is key. As for me, we go to California or somewhere else sunny for a month every winter, and, I do a lot of snowmachining. 700 cc of two-stroke power, 135 hp, 0-60 in 3 seconds. Keeps the blood pumping.

noncom23 02-23-2007 02:52 PM

Man I would never make it. How 'bout some pics of that 700cc
machine when you get time?

Lotus Man 02-23-2007 03:40 PM

Good God...

Sedoy 02-23-2007 03:53 PM

Last winter in Russia, Novokuznesk we got -56 F. No big deal...

Trouties 02-23-2007 03:59 PM

I'm headed to Maui tomorrow myself! Looks like you need it more then I do @ -40 below!

rayxi 02-23-2007 04:03 PM

That's cold! We get close to that once or twice a winter here but it's never sustained.

Blue Mountain Raider 02-23-2007 04:03 PM

u know, i just did a conversion and found out -40F is exactly -40C as well. yeah its freakin cold. i remember seeing a top gear episode where they placed a diesel car in -40C and the car couldn't even start.

Almost balmy out today...eh?

Yeah, everyone thinks it's impossible to survive cold temps like that, but they also seem to think we stand out in cold for hours at a time when it's -40 C or -40 F... Hell, I go from a heated house to a heated garage to a heated X5 to heated underground parking to my heated office (where I make sure I've got a nice hot Starbucks latte). The only time I feel the cold is when I open the car window to swipe my security pass!!

You got that right! The longest you have to be outside is the walk from the parking lot into the grocery store. Although I do feel just a little bit sorry for my friends without heated garages. When its this cold, they have to freeze their azz off in the morning to go start their truck and let it warm up for 20-30 minutes. And the seats are still cold when they get in! But if the weather was nice here in the winter, it would be looking like California and my house would have cost me $1.3 million.

vinuneuro 02-23-2007 07:37 PM

Yikes, we haven't even matched that with the wind chill.

Btw, it's pretty cool that your drl's are on with your parking and fog lights. How does that work?

What are you talking about? I've been here for a decade and it's never come close. Now Winnipeg is a different story. I lived there for a bit, and one day I was driving outside the city and watching the thermometer go down, down, down.... until it hit -50, then it went blank!!!! :wtf:

X5Boston 02-23-2007 11:02 PM

But it's a "dry cold" :)

noncom23 02-23-2007 11:16 PM

If you have DRLs activated, then turn the switch to parking lights and hit the foglight switch. It was do-able in my X3 for the short time we had DRLs activated (my dad made them do it by mistake; I asked them to turn it off at the next visit).

Lol I thought the -1F I had in Montreal + wind was a bit chilly. I should experience this -40F................

X5 in AK 02-25-2007 02:01 AM

Damn, I'm impressed anybody was able to see the polar bear!

Everyone can rest assured that the X5 is tucked into its warm, toasty garage for the night. This is its first winter here, my X5 used to live in California, but it handles the cold just fine. Although I'm sure that it never thought it would have to put up with this weather when it got the cold weather pkg installed in it back at the factory!!!

There was a request earlier on this thread for a snowmachine pic. I'll post some pics on the forum when I get back from Hawaii in a week, look for them after the 5th....
Did I mention I'm going to Hawaii for a week? :nanana:

noncom23 02-25-2007 02:39 AM
