Service Engine soon ????

My X5 still has three green bars but it just started giving me a warning light for Service Engine Soon. Any ideas, why it could be ??? I am out of town for vacation and will be going back to Michigan tomorrow. Please let me know your thoughts ...........

I had the same problem. My mechanic said it has to do mostly with the emissions system however it could be something else as well. I replaced the emissions pump in the rear whell well for $500 and the light came back on 8 miles from the shop. It goes back in on Monday.

I have read on this board that Autozone will read the error codes for you for free. I would start there. If there isn't an Autozone in your area call around to the other shops and ask if they have a OBD 2 scanner you could use. There is a master list of the meanings of the numbers it gives you on this board too. Good Luck!

Amout a month ago, i mistakenly put 87 octane gas in my X5. Could that be the reason. But it has driven almost 1000 miles after that.

without knowing the codes, it's really hard to know what the issue might be. If you get back to town and want the codes checked, give me a call. I have an OBD-II code reader.

Thanks as always, UCrewX5. I'll try getting in to dealer first. I am loosing coolant as well after 3 or 4 days. Last time they checked it but didn't find anything. Also, last time they mentioned that serp belts need replacement. I called them yesterday asking if serp belts are covered under maintenance warranty and they said 'Yes' to my surprise (as they should have changed them when they mentioned it last during service time).

when they replace the serp belt ask them to make sure the rollers don't need replaced too.

What exactly is serp belt? Also, my X5 makes a lot of grinding noise when it is started first time on cold engine during these cold days. The noise goes away after it runs for almost 5 minutes or so.

serpentine belt is the big long belt that drives all the things off the engine such as the alternator, water pump, power steering pump, etc.

I don't know about that grinding noise. But my X did the same grinding noise and it ended up being the oil separator and some other hoses in the back of the engine, just an FYI. But the service engine soon, mine did the same also and it was just the gas cap. I changed it and it went away. I hope this helps you save some money. Good Luck

Thanks a lot guys. I just capped my cap tight. It took it two days to disapear. While on our back to Detroit, MI, the light went away itself. I felt really very relieved. I am taking my X5 anyway to stealer for serp belt replacement as it makes alot of oise when i start it as the first thing in the morning on cold engine.
