Key not charging??

I did a search and didn't come up with anything so...

I have an '01 3.0i. A couple of months ago one of my keys stopped working, i.e. it wouldn't lock or unlock the doors remotely. I figured the rechargeable battery in it had died so I switched to my other key. It worked for about 2 weeks and then it too stopped working. As a test, I put the X5 key in my 330's ignition overnight. The next morning it worked great and continued to work for about a week and then died.

I have thus figured out that my X5 is not charging the key for some reason. Has anyone else had this happen and know how to fix it?

Thanks in advance!!

Did you try a reprogram also?

I just broke down and bought a new key. At first the door lock/unlock functions started working only intermittently. Then the same happened to the trunk unlock/open. Eventually none of the buttons on the key fob would work. The key would still start the vehicle. I tried reprogramming several times, both ways described on this site with no success. Spoke to a technician while at the dealer parts counter and he claims he has seen keys go bad although couldn't elaborate. Second key is still working fine and the new/repelacement key also works fine with all functions working once it was programmed.

Not sure this is the same problem described above, but it's another data point. Hope it helps. BTW - the key was $165 including tax...most expensive key I have ever purchased. Ordered late Wednesday and picked it up on Friday - apparently they are all cut in NJ. You need to have your license and ownership of the vehicle with you before they will process an order.

I hope it's not the key, $165 is a lot of money for a key.

I suspect it's the X5 itself (which could be even more costly) since the keys work fine after a charge in my 330 but then go "dead" again after a few days.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread but I have the same issue as the OP.

My key stopped working so I cut it open and replaced the battery with a new panasonic rechargeable.

It worked fine for nearly two weeks and then stopped working again. I have checked the voltage on the battery and it is down to 2.67 volts.

I'm pretty certain that the car is therefore not charging the battery.

Any ideas what could cause the inductive coil to stop working ? I guess the simplest option will be to replace the battery again with a normal cr2025 and leave it at that.

Thanks
