Check Engine Light
 

Check engine light came on last week. (2000 X5 4.4)

I reset the light when I had to reset the battery (disconnect for 10 mins).

After about 50 miles its back on. I used a Launch Creader (cheapy obdii) reader and cannot get any codes.

Any ideas... I guess maybe I'll stop by the auto parts store and have them scan it.

Is there ever a case when the check engine light comes on with no codes?

I do have to replace my Final Stage Resistor...its on order. I've noticed the fan runs for a while -- keeps going all night... when the car is off.

Would the final stage resistor cause any wierd check engine lights???

No correlation between FSR and your SES light. :tsk:

If the SES light is on then a code has been generated.

The code showed P0170 which autozone identified as the O2 sensor. They said it needs 2 of them.

The following options:
Bosch 13477 83.99 each -- OE Type 4 wire;heated; 2 required
Bosch 15738 101.99 each -- Universal 4 wire;heated 2 required
Denso 234-4672 186.99 -- OE Type
Denso 234-4201 155.99 -- Universal

My wife got the info so I wasn't there to ask any questions.

Does this sound right? After some reading it looks like the P0170 could be more than the O2 sensors such as the MAF sensor.

Where do I go from here?

The MAF should affect both banks but your code is only for bank 1. You could try changing just the pre-cat sensor for that bank.

It could very well be the O2 sensors, you have a '00 with probably some miles on it, it's about that time IMO.

change these out?

Doesn't seem like it would take any special tools.

Even though I'm getting the code P0170 which is bank 1 should I replace them both at the same time?

I would only change the one with the code, if it aint broke don't fix it.
I think there's a special tool for it but I don't know it is needed.

******Update*********
I started with the P0170 code which was identified as the O2 sensor on bank 1. I replaced the sensor and cleared the code. The SES light was off for about 500 miles now it is back on.

Now I'm getting the P0170 code and P0173 code.

I checked the rear intake hoses and they look fine. The car drives great... the SES is annoying.

Any ideas???

SAME (100% down to driving great) thing here, 70,xxx miles and I got P0170 and P0173 codes. No vac. leaks (personally+mechanic checked), MAF replaced, my next step was going to be both 02 sensors.

00 4.4
