Check brake linings
 

I have a 2002 X5 3.0i & the control panel said to check brake linings. I had the brake pads replaced & the mechanic (whom I have trusted for years on other vehicles) said that everything is in good condition. It still says to check brake linings. Will this warning go off eventually or am I still missing something? The mechanic said it may still need to go through a check cycle to clear. It was just done today. This is a new vehicle to me so I am still learning.....please be gentle!!!!

Were the sensors replaced? If they were replaced then I believe that by turning the ignition to the on position for 30 sec without starting, then turn off and then start you can reset the car. Otherwise the warning should go off on its own after some time

My '03 4.4i "Check Brake Lining Pads" light just came on today. I was able to clear it by turning the ignition to the ON pos for about 30 secs without starting. I did hear some clicking and the lite extinguished. Don't know how long it will be b4 seeing the warning again. It seems that there is substantial amount of brake pads left looking at the brakes. Does anyone have recommendations where I should look for replacement pads?

If you were happy with the BMW pads, get the replacements from your dealer. You will likely need rotors as well, as they are not designed to be turned on a lathe. You can decide to use them again, but it may not be worth it if they won't last through another cycle (you don't need to worry about the minimum thickness today, but rather what it will be when the new pads are worn out).

If you want to try a different pad, many of us have used Axxis Deluxe for the great reduction in brake dust, with very similar performance. Recommend you source them from Zeckhausen Racing, a site sponsor. Great service.

If the light came on due to the pads being worn out (as compared to a poor connection), then the sensor needs replacement. There is one on the LF, and one on the RR. They can be purchased from your dealer.

thanks JCL for your prompt response. I decided to replace the two front rotors , a complete set of pads including two new sensors at Just Brakes shop. Just didn't want to fool with the DIY weekend job. My car has 63k miles and badly need the pads replaced. I should be good for awhile on the brakes. Thanks again.

Must be hard on the brakes. I replaced the front & rear pads only around 50-55K and went till 100K before replacing all 4 rotors. Have never changed the sennsors, they looked good when I did the rotors. Maybe check the sensors connections. ['02 3.0i, 116,000 miles].
