Driving Style?

There was a thread today about mileage. I was just wondering what everybody's driving style was like. Some of those Xs have quite a few miles on the original tranny.

If you would be so kind as to post your mileage, original gearbox or not and driving style that would be great!

BTW I have 33k on an 05 4.4 with a highly agressive driving style, and as I would hope still the original gear box.

SilverBullet 03-14-2007 01:13 PM

Its fun to drive aggressively.

noncom23 03-14-2007 01:19 PM

Aggressive yes. Steptronic, occasionally.
Speed gear most of the time.
80-90 mph avg on in town hwy,
lots of passing, usu from the right lane.

2006 4.4, 18500mi, 6 speed Auto.

Krunk Man 03-14-2007 01:20 PM

lol, i see alot of aggressive driving

cmyX6go 03-14-2007 01:23 PM

'05 4.4, 29,000 miles and I always have to be the first out the gate

I don't know if I'd consider myself an aggressive driver, I do have a heavy foot. Let's call it spirited.

GiRARDsays 03-14-2007 01:29 PM

i'm TRYING to drive conservatively since the gas prices are skyrocketing here in Southern California. $3.35/gallon for 91 octane in an SUV with a 24 gallon tank is rediculous. Oh well. I still love my X5.

Michelle 03-14-2007 01:31 PM

2001 4.4i, 69,999 miles

:zoom:

I'm always the first off the line and other vehicles rarely pass me on the highway. But, I have been trying to limit "flooring" it lately....(trying!)

xnsf 03-14-2007 01:34 PM

when i have nowhere important to go, i'm the one doing 65 in the fast lane ;)

i always monitor the mpg gauge and drive accordingly to be the most fuel efficient ($3.50+ per gallon in san francisco )

but there are a few times where i just enjoy the rush and power...who can blame me? :D

dr.jay 03-14-2007 01:37 PM

Aggressive, hate people who drive 55 in the passing lane, I love to use my horn on those people in the daytime at night they get the highbeams until they move lol!!! If I cared about the price of gas I would have bought a Echo.

X5 in AK 03-14-2007 02:03 PM

Sometimes aggresive, but usually always fast!

I have learned that there are places to go fast, and places to take it easy.
On the highway (all two lane up here), I basically never get passed. Not that there is ever much traffic.

There is just something about a V8 at full throttle...

And if I really cared about the gas prices, I'd ride a bike.

pseto 03-14-2007 02:09 PM

I am moderately aggressive with the X5, but even more so with my coupe ;)

X5Jay 03-14-2007 02:11 PM

I don't "floor" it much, but I'd say my driving style is spirited as well. I use manual mode most of the time as I have paddle shifters and they make it very convenient and irresistible! I'm usually the first one off the line too because I don't want to take a chance of getting an annoying slow driver in front of me. Am I being childish? ;)

:iagree:

the head 03-14-2007 02:49 PM

I drive like a complete jerkoff most of the time...I find my self punching it from lights a lot...it is something that carries over from driving one of my other cars (rumored that agressive takeoffs dont wear out the clutches as fast in f1 style transmissions) well that and I am always in a hurry

jwilburn 03-14-2007 03:10 PM

I wouldnt call my driving aggressive so much, just quicker than most. I really find that my X does better when its driven hard. In the early mornings I drive slow (because Im still half asleep) and I feel every bump, hear every rattle, notice un-needed high revs.

But if I just drive it quickly, everything seems to fall into place. Bumps smooth out, cant hear the rattles, and higher revs are warrented.

jwilburn 03-14-2007 03:24 PM

Oh also, this brings up another question. I know some people who, when trying to quickly/agressively pass, flip the car into Sport mode. Then when around the other car flip it back to regular automatic.

Does this really do anything other than waste more gas?

dmlgc 03-14-2007 03:36 PM

I guess I'm in the Aggressive category, I bought a BMW to drive not take a ride in.

cpatzer 03-14-2007 03:54 PM

Yea, but has anybody here had to swap a tranny? And no, I don't mean transvestite.

Wagner 03-14-2007 03:55 PM

I'm in the red Jules.

Chip 03-14-2007 04:23 PM

I drive aggerssively, I have 9900 miles on my 05" 4.4i. I use the steptronic on the highway and when passing people (I just keep it in the sport mode)

alpac 03-14-2007 04:33 PM

2000 4.4 with 87k miles on it. It drives like a charm so far and looks like new. I do not drive aggressively but use the Steptronic almost all the time. I grew up with manual and using Steptronic makes me feel I have more control on the car that way, particularly when driving on country roads which we have many over here in the Raleigh.

blondboinsd 03-14-2007 04:38 PM

Aggressive but that is changing with this 3.50 per gallon prices!!!!!!!!!

2005 3.0i 30800 miles

AzNMpower32 03-14-2007 04:42 PM

Depends on a lot of factors, like where I'm at, prevailing road conditions, traffic etc...

About 80% of the time it's fairly laid back. Normal Drive, upshifts around 2500rpm, leisurely acceleration. But that doesn't mean slow.......I might not get going quickly, but once I get up to speed I'd rather not slow down for some nitwit in the wrong lane.

Sometimes, like in this good weather when people get too relaxed, I can't help but be more aggressive because these drivers just really tick me off. They crowd in the wrong lanes, they talk on the cell, they hang their arms out the window, and drive under the speed limit. I used to think warmer weather makes for more aggressive traffic, but it seems like people are just in la-la land. I can't help the occasional aggressive lane change. Still, never past 3k rpm.

Then there's the times when I'm alone on the backroads looking for a good drive. 9/10ths driving :driver:..........and oh that sonorous inline-6! That amazing BMW chassis, brakes, aggressive gearbox.......yea I could go on. All the things that make a BMW a BMW come out to play :)

 just wait, we're going to be in the 4's in a few weeks.

cpatzer 03-14-2007 05:23 PM

Yea, but even if it goes up $1.00 a gallon what is that like $24.00. Hmm 4.8 lattes. Who cares.

Only someone from Seattle would measure gas prices in lattes/gallon!

gregwx5 03-14-2007 06:07 PM

Whats the "D" for my X always seems to be in "S" or 1,2,3,4,5!!

You must go to Starbucks! LOL! You can't get out of there for less than $5!

X5 in AK 03-14-2007 08:16 PM

Based on these poll results, I'd have to say this site is populated by a bunch of lead foots! :D

Or is that lead feet? Hmmm.

Curious Joel 03-14-2007 09:57 PM

I drive spiritedly.. I don't use Steptronic, cause the 330xi is a stick. :)
I average about 80-90 on the highway. I don't really drive agressively and weave. I only pass on the right if the person in the left lane is doing under 75 and won't move.

I have a certain procedure for going through toll booths, however.
-Slow down to 30-ish
-Turn off the radio.
-Downshift to 2nd.
-Roll through the EZ-Pass at 15
-If nobody's in front of me, it's full throttle all the way up to 95 or so, up to redline listening to the best song ever, the noise of a BMW straight-6. Then I turn the music back on, and settle into traffic around 80mph.

Order a sweetened Passion iced tea. Out the door for $2.00, and the most refreshing drink you can possibly have when it's hot out.

I would say that I'm in the middle of medium and aggressive. Whenever I need to pass quickly, it's a natural instinct to jump into manual. When the gas needle is getting low, I really get to driving for fun. The X is much lighter and the road seems more open to me:driver: I also enjoy the manual mode in rush hour traffic.........Phil

trueX5er 03-15-2007 08:26 AM

Right now, I'm driving like a grandma, for obvious reasons. I'm ALMOST at 1300 miles! Then I can floor it! I usually drive kinda in the middle, but not at all slow. I like to do "take-offs" when I go on to the expressway on ramp, @ about 10 mph (if nobodys behind me), then slap it in sport, and floor it till I get to 75-80. Me and my friend with an S4 do it all the time :D :D

Most of the time, I do. I like to frequent other places as well though, don't want the competition going anywhere any time soon. That will just leave Starbucks to rule the world. Mu ha ha ha.

Hmm... when I bought mine brand new the salesman told me there wasn't any break in period. I floored mine right out of the gate.

Be realistic. There isn't anything "magic" that happens to the engine and differential at 1300 miles. According to the Book, it says gradually increase engine and vehicle speeds after this point. In reality, you can start accelerating hard now. What's the difference in oil seals and stuff between 1260 miles and 1305 miles? None.
