Auto locking at 5mph....

Does anyones doors locking automatic at 5 or more mph,is this something that needs to be programmed by dealer?:zoom:

Wagner 03-17-2007 11:59 AM

What???

Please state this in the form of a question :)

Late model BMW's doors lock, on some models, at 5mph. I believe the dealer can manipulate this part of the computers program.

KENT4.8IS 03-17-2007 12:08 PM

Make sure you bring all the keys to the dealer. It is simple programming just like daytime running lights. Honestly I thought I could get used to it. But no. I am getting rid of this option. Too much hassle letting people in, opening the trunk.

I always lock my car when I am driving. I have heard of total strangers running next to your car at 60 mph, and getting in. :)

It's a key option. So you can ask the dealer to program only 1 key to have autolocking while leaving this feature disabled on the other key. This is what I did. So I have the option just by using the proper key.

My fiance was lucky she had her car locked while driving. She was at a light and a guy ran up to her 07 Camry and tried to get in. She quickly sped away. I don't want to know what would have happen if they were not locked.

Exactly. The last thing I wanna do is live in a place where you have to lock your car, house, close your windows to feel safe. Doesn't matter how close or convenient it might be to your workplace. I live within an hour of NYC. We don't even have police department just a resident trooper taking naps from now and then in hidden spots. Cars homes not locked. Why? We have no mass transport here which in a way attributes to presense of "dirtbags" in your hood.

When you grow up in the big city, you can leave it, but it never leaves you. I don't care where I am. Granted, some areas have higher potential than others but there is the potential for a dirtbag anywhere

Zulu95 03-17-2007 06:23 PM

I said it before: G-lock beats Autolock ever time.

Chip 03-17-2007 07:03 PM

Good option if you live in a place like Newark,NJ. In Newark, people just walk up to your door at a stoplight and point a gun at your head and tell you to get out of the car. Then, they drive away...

Dude,

Newark, NJ is where I landed for 1.5 years whan I came from Russia. I loved it. I still sometimes drive though it with only good memories. If someone comes to your car with a gun or just simple determination of depriving you of posession of that car GET OUT! I would even give suggestions on how jumpy the car is in sports mode so that they would not kill themselves. A locked door is not gonna save you from a bullet. It will only make it harder to get out of the cat since you have to pull twice on the latch to open it.

Be real. A locked door, window, storm door, even alarm is not going to stop a determined criminal or criminal-to-be.

i think thats exaggerating.. i've driven through newark (even at night) in the 540, numerous times and while it can seem scary, i've never had an issue. newark is a high crime neighborhood alright but its probably not worse wash dc or some parts of la.

Wagner 03-17-2007 08:12 PM

It isn't worse then any part of Baltimore.

agree.. your car isnt worth your life.. sometimes a locked door will deter casual theives but not anyone desperate and determined as to carjack you in the middle of the street with a firearm.

PAPI 03-17-2007 08:34 PM

Then there is te "security" option offered by BMW (slight armored cars).... very common option as I understand.

Zulu95 03-18-2007 09:20 AM

All cars come with a very important security option: The nut that holds the steering wheel!

Don't forget some dirtbags even know how to drive, even if the car is "stolen"; looking for there next victim...even in nice areas.

It saved my fiance from getting pulled out of her car and beaten up or more... Not all carjackers/rapist carry guns, so you BE REAL!!!!:angryfire :swear:

Hey DC isnt thaaaaat bad. I only had a guy try to open my door once before, and thankfully my car had automatic locks. So I just kept on driving, nothing bad.

Do y'all know if the dealer can program the doors to unlock when you put it in park though? That would be a nice feature to have.

kevnmurphy 03-21-2007 11:31 AM

I had that option in my 97 M3. It might have been part of the aftermarket alarm, but whenever I turned off the ignition, the doors unlocked. It was such a nice feature. I hope it is part of the factory programmin options.

X5 in AK 03-21-2007 02:21 PM

According to info I found somewhere on X5world, they can set the doors to unlock upon putting the car into park. It was called the 'auto-unlock' function. Have to get that programmed by the dealer.
Mine does not auto unlock either, which is a major PITA.

Don't think the auto unlock is possible on the X5, but if you can get yours programmed to do so, do please let us all know!

What bulbs do the running lights use? Mine doesn't have DRLs...I'd like it to, but in yellow.

All BMWs have DRLs.........basically it uses the high-beam (inner) bulbs at reduced output.

I hated auto-lock and got rid of it within a month, but some people like it I guess. My theory is that if someone really wanted to hijack your car, they'd probably bust the window and/or point a gun at your head anyway.

kevnmurphy 03-21-2007 04:26 PM

If you want some of these options on or off, do you have to get a new key made, or can you reprogram an existing key?
Thanks

Appreciate it. Just gotta find yellow 9005s I believe

Your pretty close by too btw..

SilverBullet 03-21-2007 05:09 PM

Having the door locked, even with some determined to get into your car, still gives you a few extra seconds to get out of there. You must live in crime-less communities if you feel that safe.

Well, I'm just going off of what I read. Its certainly possible that auto-unlock doesn't exist on the X5.

And I won't be the guy to find out if its possible. I'm getting the auto-lock feature turned off next time I'm near the dealer!

I'm more likely to get wiped out by an errant moose on the road than car-jacked. :nanana:

I can try and imagine myself in a situation where auto-lock would provide me with an extra few seconds............not.

Lets see. Doors locked and stopped at an intersection. Man with handgun knocks on window, threatening me. I try and escape thru passenger side......D'oh seat belt strapping me in! Unbuckle belt, try to squirm outta driver's seat.. D'oh! Legs caught between steering column and seat! Try harder to get unstuck. Ow! shift lever jabbed into ribs! Kicking wildly, I get to the passenger seat, ready to escape. Damn. Door's locked....must double pull. :banghead:

In real life, if someone threatened me outside my driver's door, I'd just open the door really hard and whang the guy with the door, then drive off.

You can just hit the gas.;) It is hard to say what you will do if that ever happens to you, But I feel safer that at least the doors locked. Do you lock your house doors, windows?

bobbyp 03-21-2007 06:20 PM

After the auto locks kick in all it takes is 2 quick pulls on the handle to open. Carjacker will be distracted - thinking your doors are locked and waiting for you to hit the unlock button - then Wham!

[UNDFTD] 03-21-2007 07:07 PM

If someone with a handgun were to approach, I'd do the same. Smack him with the door- unless he backed away from it like they do in the movies...while the persons opening. Another option. Use V8 AWD acceleration. He can shoot @ the car outta anger all he wants...I get home alive and thats what matters.

Actually uh that wouldn't work. At point-blank range, the shooter can still hit the driver pretty darn well even if the vehicle is moving (not too quickly). Plus, he just needs to hear the roar of the V8 and pull the trigger.

This thread has just gone from "auto locking" to "self defense in face of carjacker".:hijack:

jbimmer24 03-27-2007 06:25 PM

Well, went to the dealer and had the car programmed to lock all doors and tailgate when in drive and i hit 5mph...nice:thumbup:

cpatzer 03-27-2007 06:37 PM

My new 525i has this feature. I LOVE IT. In parts of Seattle you wouldn't want to go driving around withought your doors locked. Now I don't have to push the damn button anymore. I also made it via my Idrive so that when I unlock the door it unlocks all of them. Otherwise I always have to push it twice for my wife and kids.
