shaking manual shifter before speeding up from a dead stop?

Hi, I saw the movie "The Hire" and in one of the episodes "Star" with Madonna I noticed that Clive Owen was shaking the manual shifter left and right a few times then he just floored the m5.

Just wondering though, does it actually do anything in real life or is it just for dramatic purposes?

Thanks.

PS - Anyone done that on their manual x? :D

Everyone does that on their manual. Its just to make sure you arnt in gear.

And Star was awesome! I went out and bought a 540 6 speed after that!

Ahh I see, good to know. At first I thought it was supposed to make the car go faster from a stop. Yeah as you can tell I don't drive manual, but would like to learn. :D

If you ever find a little lever that you can flick a few times and it will make your car go faster please let me know!

But seriously if I wasnt in a huge city I'd drive a manual every day! I lasted about 10 months here in Chicago before the traffic got to me. So now I own my first automatic BMW. Which I never thought would happen, but its a SUV/SAV so thats how I justify it to myself.

Agree, when i was driving 2003 Civic Si hatch. I always did that. You do it automatically with manual tranny after awhile.
