How do I replace the CV joints?
I need to replace a CV joint on my 2001 X5 3.0. The front outer boot has ripped. The joint is still good, so I'd like to just replace the joint but I dont have a "how-to" manual since Bentley hasnt come out with one for the X5 yet. Anybody know where I can find a good write-up?

There are two good write-ups linked on the home page.

Might want get a price from an independent mech.
This job gets big fast. My 2 cents. |
I replaced the entire rear CV joints in my Porsche 944 and the fronts in my VW GTI ... are these really any different on our X5s?

Doesn't sound like it for you. Some of the guys get into it and prob don't have your experience.

Yeah, I was just reading the write-up and one can see why it's a $450 job for just one side. :)
I can see how you could get in over your head really fast and be in a place where you can't get out of easily or cheaply. |
How was it doing the Pcars? Rough?

It actually wasn't too bad ... the biggest challenge was finding the 12mm Triple Square "Hex" driver for it. Also known as Cheesehead or 18-point driver ... then the toll is crazy expensive and super brittle. Gotta love the German hardware! :)
