Rear Frame Bushes

I have only recently bought my X5 D and have had a report that the rear frame bushes have dropped. Can I replace these myself and what does it entail to due this work. I have been quoted £400 by bmw to do this.

Would there be different terminology for "rear frame bushes"? I do not think we use that term here in the US.

When I say rear frame bushes ,this is the rear suspension mounting sub frame which has 4 large mounting bushes

If you have the time, tools and inclination I don't see why not.

What is exactly involved to carry out the job,and are any special tools required.

I just did the rear subframe bushings on my auto-x M3 a few weeks ago. It is a PITA to do and I installed poly bushings which made the install easier. The X5 looks similar.

You first have to drop the exhaust and rear sway. Then unbolt the rear diff from the driveshaft. Then remove the rear diff as well as unbolt the rear control arms and shocks. Then you unbolt and drop the subframe. Once the subframe is out the fun starts. The bushings have to be pressed out, drilled and sawzalled out, or torched and air hammered out. I had to do C. If the above doesn't seem too bad for you then go ahead and DIY. Othewise send it to a shop.
