Battery Drained on my X
 

My X did not want to start w/ nasty clicking sound, took out the battery and charged up to 706 CS rating. Drove 45 minutes and the battery was drained again. I scheduled a visit to my dealer for possible alternator warranty replacement. Battery has a shipped date of January 2007. Does anyone know if battery this new is under any kind of warranty?

Does this happen to fairly new batteries or do you guys think its the alternator. I'd appreciate your opinions.

If you use the search engine on the site you would find a million battery issues. This is a VERY common issue with BMW's because of the amount of electronics running when the car is off. If the car sat for a month, that could drain the battery. Though they usually don't go as new as yours, it hasn't not happened.

BMW will cover everything if your X is still under warranty. It is not your alternator (since you didn't post the year/model of your X is is hard to tell if a warranty covers it or not).

Its actually an 03 certfified pre-owned w/ 25K miles on it

They said Alternator is covered but battery is not

If it is a 2007 BMW battery it should be covered, but as you point out it went dead again after recharging it.

How long did the battery sit dead; most auto batteries have reduced capacity after being left to sit in a deep discharge condition.

The battery should have its own warranty.

I agree. I mentioned that date I saw on the battery (January 2007) to my service advisor and hopefully they replace that for free as with any new batteries if indeed this is the problem.

The same thing happened on my 02. At first i thought it was my battery so I got it recharged it and everything was fine for like 30 mins. Then all my electronics started going crazy and my X5 went into some sort of safety mode. It wouldn't go past a certain speed. Then all my electronics shut off while the engine was running. Not even the speedometer was working. The engine ran for a good 5 to 10 minutes then it stalled. I was lucky my dad was following me since we were going to pick up some family members at the airport. After continous attemps at jump starting the car it finally started, but it would shut off at 10 minute intervals, even earlier when the rpms dropped. Needless to say, it was not a fun day. I recommend you get the alternator checked out since that was my problem. After that incident i lost faith in the OEM alternator and purchashed one from autozone with a lifetime warranty. The continuous jumpstarts also damaged the battery. So I got a battery there too, with a lifetime warranty. Switched them out for 100 labor (altogether) and $ 350 in parts.

If this persists, try chaging the Final Stage (Heater) Resistor. It's nearly always the source of such difficulties!!

It can also be faulty seat memory and other OEM modules, iPod chargers, bluetooth add-ons, after market stereo units and a host of other things. It does not take much of an extra current draw to prevent the "sleep mode" activation.
