'Check Brake Linings' WTF????
I'm getting this error on the OBC. I take it the brake pad sensors are kicking in? The car has only done 17K miles is this normal? Surely I should get more mileage out of a set of brake pads?

I'm interested to hear what others are getting out of a set of pads though. Cheers, Dave. |
Yup, need new pads unless there is a problem with your sensor.
City Vs. Highway, and driving style as you know are the variables. I changed mine after 22K. |
Can't say about the pads. My rotors warped at 18,000 mi and replaced...

Car is booked in on Wednesday. Whilst I'm there, I'll get a quote for the new X5 - just spent 20 mintes on the BMW website - the options look great - head up display, rear DVD system, active seats . . . . I kind of like it. |

Could also be that you rest your other foot on the brake pedal. Are you a two footed driver?

chimed in on how long our pads/rotors lasted... unfortunately, the "search?" tab here is the antithesis of Google, imo. ... Maybe someone can dig it out... from memory, the mileages were all over the map, due to terrain, traffic, driving style, etc.. In my case, our '01 had it's front pads & rotors R&R'd at 48K miles. The rear pads & rotors are the originals; we have 58K miles on those. Driving is about 90%+ high speed highway, and we have a 5 spd manual, but I don't think that has a great effect. Cheers! mD |

So far 18,500k on my 06 4.4 no brake linning lights so far.....
|
Let's see you have an O5 X5 correct? No full maintaince factory warranty across the pond for that year vehicle?
I got 28K on the front and the rears are close. Quote:

My "check brake" warning came on this afternoon! I have ~38k on mine. I guess I will take it in in a few days, when I have a little time.
|
Mine went at 22k, the car was driven in DC and the previous owner was clearly a hard driver - with my driving they will last much longer. I really think it is all about the area you drive in.
|
My brake pads has usually lasted well over 60k and my X has now over 38k in ODO. I have quite relaxed driving style, I let the car roll to intersections and if I see a traffic jam on highway I just take the foot off the gas and let it roll, I'm just lazy and don't want to brake and accelerate all the time, I like to drive smoothly which also saves the brakes. But the X5 is heavy so let's see how long the breaks last, so far doing good.

I got the check brake linings warning during my 2pm Dunkin Donuts run. 30,430 miles. I'm very surprised I lasted this long. Can't get an appt until next week, am I cool to drive. No road trips, just local stuff?
|
You should be fine but limit your trips. That's what i did.

I'm only 14 miles each way to work and just local around town stuff this weekend. My SA said they're all booked up next week but if I call him Monday morning he'll squeeze me in somewhere. They're good to me.
