Lights on the Liftgate

This may be a dumb question but I thought I read on here somewhere that the lights on the liftgate of early model US spec X5s do not work. Is this right? I have a 2001 X5 and I never noticed it until now. There are no messages on the dash so I'm assuming that this is how it's supposed to be. TIA.

Liftgate lights on my '01 work.
Inoperable interior lights won't trigger a message on the check panel. I think.

Checked the wires, bulbs and switch on the liftgate?

If your lights on your license plate do not work with will give you a message or at least it did for my 00' 4.4, it said something like.... >Check Lic. Pl light<

My '01 liftgate lights work, too.

I think he means the rear fog lights. These do not normally work on US spec. vehicles. I think there is a DIY to get them working on the Home page.

Our 01/01 production lift gate lights work fine.

4.4i, 07/00, Euro - liftgate lights work, license plate lights work, fog lights work...also receive msgs if any bulbs gone...

Just to clarify, I'm talking about the lights on the outside of the rear hatch that folds down. The interior lights and the license plate lights work fine.

those are rear fog lights. they are not available in the US.

That's what I thought when I read that article. I was just wondering because the guy at the parts counter at the BMW dealer told me that they should work. Thanks everyone for clarifying this for me.
