oil change

I did the oil change in my garage today. I let it drain for an hour. And than it took me 9 qt to fill to the max. I have 01 x5 6-cyl. How is it possible?

I thought the 6 cyl only took 8 quarts...
I generally have mine close to full if not .5 over.

No big deal as longs as you're not TOO FULL above the max line.

As long as you didn't overfill, you're okay.

After the oil change, drive it around for awhile. Then park it on a level surface and let it sit for about 5 min. Then check the dipstick and oil level.

My 4.4i usually takes 9 quarts, then a few hundred miles later I have to add about 1/4 of a quart - by the next oil change (6-7000 miles), I would have added an extra 1-2 quarts. I use Mobil 1 Synthetic 5W30. One time, I kept adding oil because the Check Oil light would come up constantly and it was hard to read the dipstick until I got scared and went back to my mechanic and had him drained it - the car had about 10 quarts. So, be careful.

I was thinking of using a heavier oil - 10W30 - Any thoughts?

yes I replaced oil filter . The dipstick is not the best too, sometimes I check it's full, 2 min later its on min mark ))=. If u want havier oil try 5w40, no reason use 10w30 it has less flow if compare to 5w30 0r 5w40.

Check your dipstick about 5-10 minutes after you've driven it at normal operating temp and shut it off to let the oil drain back to the bottom of the engine in order to get an accurate dipstick reading.
