Just when I was feeling good about everything, this happens!
After a quick stop at the grocery store I returned to my X. After getting in and starting the vehicle I pushed the radio power knob several times. The orange light stayed on and wouldn’t turn off. I waited for about thirty seconds and the light finally went out. I tried to turn the radio on, but it wouldn’t budge. I thought about it for a minute, and then decided to turn the car off and on to try to reset the radio module. This didn’t work and now I am writing this in search of answers. I lost all audio functions including radio, voice recognition, navigation, and phone. I tried calling out with the Bluetooth phone system, it starts to dial (I assume since there is no audio to confirm this) then hangs up. The navigation system appears to be working, but there are no audio prompts. Voice recognition is also working because the commands are displayed on the instrument culture, but there is no audio. Any advice would be appreciated.
My vehicle is a 2003 BMW X5 4.4i W/ Nav and Video Module Thanks, Adam |
sounds like a bad radio module; I remember when I retrofitted a newer style radio module in my X5 that I mixed up two of the wires; it ended up that nothing worked, no sound out of nav, CD, tape or anything. So, if it's not a poor connection between the wiring harness and the radio module, it means the radio module might be defective. Anybody else have any advice? (BTW, if you have a later build 03, you're most probably still covered under new car warranty, unless you're over 50k miles already)

Had something like it happen once to my "Business Radio". Pulled all fuses for the radio and let it sit for 10 minutes. Nothing worked until I disconnected the radio head unit in the dash and everything worked fine since after I reconnected it.

Update. Thank you very much for your quick responses. I was fairly sure it was a bad radio module to, but this morning I decided to try disconnecting the battery and waiting ten minutes, to my surprise it worked. Everything is back to normal. I think the module had froze up somehow in the software and needed to be reset. Anyway I appreciate your help and I hope this information is useful to someone in the future.
