H & R Springs Installed but WTF...
 

Hello,

I called myself, "doing the right thing" by taking the car to BMW to add the H&R springs, but this is turning out to be a dissaster. I went to pick up the X and the front looked as I expected, but the rear looked slammed. I wrote it off because of this or that and drove away. 2 minutes later the famous, "SELFLEVEL SUSP INACT" popped up on the display. I took it back to them and they connected the car to the computer and stated that they could not change it and it was adjusted as if there where 19" wheels on the car, (22" Breytons BTW). They said they have to contact BMW MUNICH to get advise on what to do. I was under the impression that BMW X5s with rear air suspension, and H&R springs with the rear links require no computer adjustment for 1.2" front and 1.0" in the rear. Somebody help please!!

From my experience, the person may screw up the direction of the link. Take a look at the pic and compare to the joint between link and sensor. If that's the problem, reinstall it to the correct position and drive it for 15 mins. It should be fine. And I can tell you that the rear link will NOT lower your X for 1 inch( not even half, maybe 5mm ). The link is useless and the best way to do is lower it thru DIS.

Thanks. It was only after your post did I have any idea of where the link was actually placed. It's hard to ascertain it's postion without lifting the car up though, so I'll check it tomorrow. Perhaps the dealer will have talked with Munich by the time I get ready to go at it, so I don't have to. There is also a bigger dealer closer to where I work, so I'll ask the question there as well. Once again, thanks!

ASHXS, I truly owe you one. I went out this morning with a print-out of what you sent and caught hell with the tire on, and the factory wrench for the wheel lugs would not fit the Breyton long narrow holes, (good thing to find out at home instead of somewhere else needing to change to my spare). So I grabbed my wrench set with an extension and it was down hill from there. I flipped the two regulators straight up from the axle and, voila!! Everything went exactly as you wrote in your post and I'm truly grateful. I called my BMW tech and told him about it and for him to expect me on Monday to adjust the rear, because again as you've stated the rear level difference is not noticeable. I believe he can adjust it normally now and even me out, since the error code is gone now. I can't thank you enough! You turned a potentially stressful weekend into sunny days. Let me know if you're ever in Germany, accommodations are on me for sure :beerchug: !!

Make sure leave the rear height a little bit higher than the front, otherwise your X will look very funny during acceleration

They eventually adjusted the rear suspension manually and now it's finally done, or at least appearance wise. I still need to get the wheel alignment and headlights adjusted. For me to be able to tell if it looks funny during acceleration I would have to let someone else drive... :rofl: probably won't happen anytime soon. I know that the ride is very nice and while it's sittin' around, it looks a whole lot better. I'll take some more pics soon after the other work that coincides with suspension modification and get those posted. As always, I'm very happy with the vehicle, but my dealer experience varies depending on the day. :dunno:
