X5 Biggest Design Flaw
Didn't see a thread on this issue, so I couldn't resist starting one.
What is the deal with the coin holder?!!? For such a technically advanced vehicle as the x5, that rubber sorry-excuse-for-a-coin-holder in the center console is an embarrassment. The only thing harder than putting coins in is taking them out. All slots are the same size, smaller coins are unreachable beneath larger ones...I don't even use it any more, and have resorted to dropping my loose change into the bottom of the center console instead. Am I alone in my frustration?? I absolutely LOVE my x5...but I can't stand the coin holder. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Peace.... 2004 x5 4.4i Sport Package Comfort Package Sliding Cargo Floor Heated Front/Rear Seats 19" Rims |
I use the ashtray for coins, and just quarters in the holder. Meters in Chicago only take quarters anyway so its not that big of a deal to me.

I use the ashtray for my coins.

Design Flaws.
Door lock actuators, window regulators, water pumps, ball joints, control arms, most electronic modules fitted, sway bar links, final stage resistor, gauge cluster/MID dead pixels, software issues, nav. issues, t'stat housing, rear door micro-switch, bulb holders F/R.......... |
You gotta be kidding right? This is a design flaw?

Here's what i use. It's portable. It shares the space with my digital camera and toll transponder. Nice and cozy are they in the center console.

I said it before: Pleasure to drive, pain to own.

Nope. The old coins (few that i have) are in a zipper coin purse my mother gave me. :nanana:
This one (which has 2 pockets mind ya) has all quarters exclusivly for parking meters.   Quote:

I'm surprised this thread wasn't about cupholders. That's the #1 most common complaint about BMWs (by Americans).

I had no problems with the cupholders on my X5. I had issues with the cupholders in my E36 (too small) and E39 (poorly designed and too fragile), and the cupholders in my E60 are fairly useless as well (too shallow).

I hate it too. And I can't stand putting coins loosely anywhere- because then you here them while you corner. And there are a ton of curvy roads around my area!
lol but when you titled "X5 Biggest Design Flaw" I thought you were going to point out something serious. |
   That's what happens around here.

don't really care for the central locking which operates both lock and unlock |
How about the fact that the rear spoiler lip does not direct any air down over the rear window? Any little bit of dust gets lifted into the vortex created behind the car as it moves, and since there is no airflow, the dust settles all over the back of the car. A small little 'wing' or something to direct a small amount of air down the back window would prevent this problem.
Very annoying when you drive a half mile in your freshly washed X5 and the back of it is dirty already. (yes, even on a paved road. We do have those up here. Just have to watch out for the dogsleds. :nanana: ) As far as the coin holder goes: No toll roads, no parking meters here! HA! |
BMW's are for rich folk, rich folk don't count coins, so why does it need to be of high quality?

Even rich folks have to feed the meter. |

I use one of those little zip up coin purses that you get from banks. I keep it in the console compartment for easy access.
Another suggestion is to do the ash tray replacement where you replace the solid plastic ash tray with the rubber coated coin holder. (This replacement is shown on the home page of this site.) The coins still move around a little and make some noise with this tray, but not as much. |
I used an old sunglasses case to hold all my coins. Its a soft case so fits well in the center console.
How about the damn lift gate rattle. Thats a pretty annoying design flaw. Oh and when the passenger side mirror doesnt just simply go down and back up when reversing. You would think for such a large machine in this day and age, BMW could make something so simple work. But no no. |
After buying a 4.8is my wife wont let me have any money including coins.
the biggest design flaw is the lack of hop ups for the 4.8is I love this truck I am driving it more than the GT3 plus it works better than the GT3 at Home Depot |

Pg 156 of your owner's manual provides a step by step explanation for removing coins inserted into the coin holder. BMW recommends needle nose pliers, a steady hand, and patience. However they list flipping the vehichle upside down and shaking it as an alternative...
