Aftermarket Drilled Brake Rotors - 4.6is

Does anyone know where I can purchase drilled rotors from Powerstop or Brembo for the 4.6is? I have searched a few web sites but they do not seem to sell them for the 4.6is. I have emails into both companies to find out of they offer the rotors for the 4.6is. I can't see how Brembo would not make them for that vehicle.

If anyone knows of any other drilled rotors for the 4.6 please speak up!

I want to do a brake job with Axxis Deluxe pads. The brake dust is killing me! I figure if I am going to tear down the brakes I might as well change the rotors as well.

Has anyone sanded their brake calipers to make them look a bit better before paint or powercoating??

rears are the same 12.8 inchs. and I believe that the rotors on the front for the 4.6 and 4.8 are the same too @ 14 inchs. So try to search for 4.8 rotors because the 4.6 was only made for 2 years.

2002Silver4.6is 05-03-2007 06:11 PM

Is there a difference in the rear rotors being vented?

Anyone confirm that 4.8 rotors will fit a 4.6is???

NINCHS: What rotors did you buy for the front of your 4.6is?

If you look at the EBC chart on buybrakes.com you will see that the rotor for the front 4.6 and 4.8 are the same.

I ordered EBC Sport (slotted and dimpled) rotors for the front. but after waiting a week and half for them I called them up and they told me that they are on backorder for 3-5 weeks.

Ordered them from here www.ajusa.com

but got my pads from here www.buybrakes.com (I just saw that they have the same EBC rotors too) Out of stock, I checked.

my pads are sitting here and ready to go ebc red stuff up front, and axxis deluxe for the rear.

As for the rears being vented, you wont notice the difference as the front does most of the work.

Check the EBC chart on www.buybrakes.com same rotors for 4.6 and 4.8.

Morristown gave a quote for the OEM rotors, and OEM are about $100 cheaper per pair than the $300 ebcs were going to run me.

OK, after some guidance from NINCHS and a bunch of searching I think I have found cross drilled rotors for my X5.

From AutoAnything.com:

Power Stop Cross Drilled Rotors - Front Rotors
Fits the 4.8is $109 Each

From BuyBrakes.com

Brembo Ventilated Brake Disc - Rear Rotors
324mm 200 - 2003 X5 $46 Each

I figure I would do this set up with Axxis Deluxe pads up front and perhaps powder coat the calipers black.

Anyone see any problems with this setup for the 4.6is???

Ginuwine 05-03-2007 11:08 PM

is it hard to remove the calipers, mine seem to have oxidized. I would love to powdercoat them as well.

streetsoffire 05-03-2007 11:19 PM

There is a great article in the Articles section on how to do a brake job. If you are somewhat handy and have the proper tools you should be able to get it done.

So far i'm loving the axxis ultimates....good stopping power, quiet, and not as dusty as stock.

I am going to give those powerstop a shot. Topbrakes.com lists them as the same rotor for the 4.6is and 4.8is and after talking to tech support at powerstop they should fit. Same price as OEM rotors. Good find!

2002Silver4.6is 05-04-2007 03:26 PM

Awsome.... Take soome pics of the brake job!!! My project is in the works......

X5Flyboy 05-05-2007 08:43 AM

May I ask, "At what mileage did you get the indication for a brake job?" My 2006 is at 25K and my 2001 is at 70K (42K when bought used). Since most of my mileage is interstate hwy, my dash oil change indicator averages 20K (I add an extra change at around 10K) I'm just trying to get a feel for when to purchase parts before I need them. Also, Anyone know how long can you drive SAFELY after getting a brake warning indication? Given that I do 2400 mile trips, need to know if I can make it home (to my new parts) or will I have to take potluck with one of the stealers..., I mean, dealers, out on the highway?

2002Silver4.6is 05-05-2007 11:55 AM

I don't need a brake job, I just want to upgrade to Axxis pads and drilled rotors. Additionally I am the second owner so I am sure somewhere in my X's 60k miles she has had a brake job. Consequently, I am not a good one to answer your question. I am sure someone else will have a response......

NINCHS 05-05-2007 12:37 PM

Mine is at 52k right now. but I too like 2002silver above, am the 2nd owner. As for how long you can go when you get the warning light, it really depends on your driving style. and if you are on the highway and not doing any city driving or heaving brakeing. you should be able to make it a couple weeks no problem. How ever if you catch it before you get the warning light you may only need pads and not rotors. So keep an eye on them.

Estroil 4.8is 05-05-2007 12:38 PM

Also if you catch it before the light goes on you won't need sensors either.

streetsoffire 05-05-2007 01:23 PM

I am right around 33k miles, and after I had the X dropped, my Indy (Bergen Imports) told me to start thinking about front brakes. So like the rest of my 4.6 brethren, I firgured since I am going inside, why not upgrade....... Silver 5: you answered a question I was about to ask.

Estroil 4.8is 05-05-2007 01:27 PM

I'm that good!

Franklin Joseph 05-05-2007 09:07 PM

I did mine right around 56k. Pads were worn, rotors had a little more life left, but i swapped them out (they were warped)

X5Flyboy 05-08-2007 11:43 AM

Thanks for the responses - Have 70K on my 2001, but since it was originally a 3yr lease car in Philly and was sold with exactly 36,000 miles on it (r-r-right), I think they did the brakes and added new tires before selling it without CPO (I'm 3rd owner) - Since I'm selling it, I guess I'll have to discount the cost of a brake job from my original selling price - My 2006 will have 30K on it by the end of the month (13 months old next week) - I'll have my Idaho mechanic check the brakes when he does the oil change - I, too, plan to switch to Axxis pads when the time comes.

I ordered these powerstop today with the free UPS ground as I'm not in a rush. Ill let you know if they work

NINCHS 05-19-2007 11:20 PM

No go on these powerstops! Got a call yesterday and they are out of stock and they were not able to get them or locate them. Looks like its just regular vented rotors for me now!

2002Silver4.6is 05-22-2007 10:34 PM

Ok, the search continues. I stumbled across these. I will place an order for them in the next day or so:

http://www.wholesaledirectparts.com/...145-199-251-34

I have also found powder coated calipers at a decent price. They are reconditioned OEM calipers that work on a core exchange basis:

http://www2.bimmerpartswholesale.com...l=null&dp=true

The drilled with the powdercoated brakes would be a pretty good looking set up at a decent price......
