Anyone replace a pusher fan? I removed the

front bumper, disconnected PDC, fog lamps and washer hose but couldn't figure out what to remove next. Is there a DIY somewhere or a useful thread? I tried searching for pusher, aux, auxiliary fan but didn't find anything. My pusher fan stopped working, so I bought a new one to replace the old that was diagnosed as needing replacement.

Are you sure it was the aux fan which failed? It could also be the aux fan control switch. By the way there was a recall on the aux fan issue. See below:
Good luck

"2001 BMW X5 Recall ID from NHTSA: 02V138000
Auto Recall Date: 05/16/2002
Vehicle Component: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:COOLING SYSTEM:FAN
Estimated Vehicles Affected: 1550
2001 BMW X5 Defect Summary:
ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES, THE ENGINE AUXILIARY/COOLING FAN OPERATION, INCLUDING VARIABLE SPEED, IS ELECTRONICALLY CONTROLLED. FAILURE OF THE FAN MOTOR CAN CAUSE THE ELECTRICAL CIRCUITRY OF THE FAN CONTROL UNIT TO OVERLOAD AND FAIL, CAUSING THE FAN TO STOP OPERATING.
Defect Consequence:
IF THIS WERE TO OCCUR, ENGINE OVERHEATING AND SUBSEQUENT ENGINE DAMAGE COULD RESULT. IN ADDITION, IT IS POSSIBLE FOR THE FAILURE OF THE ELECTRICAL CIRCUITRY TO CAUSE A FIRE IN THE FAN CONTROL UNIT LOCATED IN THE FRONT OF THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT.
Remedy:
DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE FAN. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN SEPTEMBER 28, 2001. THIS IS A SUPPLEMENT TO A RECALL THAT BEGAN DURING SEPTEMBER 2001 (SEE RECALL CAMPAIGN 01V206). OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT BMW AT 1-800-831-1117."

Here is what I found for testing/replacing the aux fan for the e38 with the same engine as your X5 4.4. The process will be very similar.

Thanks everyone; I'll check on the recall issue and go

from there. I'll ask a BMW technician and speak to BMWNA.
