rattle in the trunk for an E53
I have heard that this is an infamous rattle. I have started to get sick of it and cannot figure out how to solve the problem. Anyone have a quick fix?
My X5 is in for service at the dealer. I figured I could tell them to fix it while its there but the noise magically stopped right before I got there! Thanks! |

I put a bunch of electrical tape over the latch, and solved that problem pretty easy. If it comes back, I will use felt tape. Until then, only the noise of the V8 and Stern on Sirius. |
Dealer fixed my tailgate rattle, they know what it is...told me it was very common. If you're under warranty let them do it. Just a twist of a screw or something on the latch/contact. If you're not under warranty then do the tape thing.

Mine has been in twice and nothing...1st time fixed then returned...next time...last week felt tape over the tire stops....stopped then resumed. I removed my spare tire and the spare chocks. Gone....but I do think I hear it again just not as bad. HELP!

Put felt pads on the trunk lid stops.

I had my '01 3.0 with the same problem couple of times at the BMW dealer, I had shop forman driving in the cargo just to locate that rattling noise and he did located: all it took 2 "sprays" of silicone in spray right in to latch on the back gate. Now the nise is coming back about once a year but silicon in spray takes care of everything, worth it to try, good luck...

All -
I have had this problem since buying my car and it was driving me crazy. I took it into the dealership and nothing was fixed. Last night, however, I followed the advice of someone on another thread and put two felt pads over the stoppers on each side of the top hatch, and electrical tape over each of the latches (2 on body where bottom hatch connects, one in middle), maybe 3 layers deep. Today I have not heard a single noise and it is totally fixed. Try it and I think your problem will be solved. |
