Improve sound system

I recently purchased a 2003 X5 3.0i that did not have premium sound. Needless to say, I was disappointed and thought that my old '96 Firebird had a better sound and audio system. I have since replaced all of the speakers with the Bavarian Sound Works upgrades, but that has provided only marginal improvement. Any suggestions? What have other people done?
