Final Stage Resistor - Covered by warranty?

These usually covered under warranty (extended)?

I know there was a problem with the earlier ones and BMW changed them on later models - so BMW are aware there is a known problem with them

What type of extended warranty do you have?

I would say that in general it should be covered. My A/C compressor and several other parts needed to be replaced and my BMW extended warranty covered 100% of it.

I have a battery drain issue on my 02' 3.0 and wanted to start by replacing the final stage resistor. What should I tell the service mgr? Is there a TSB or part number I can give them?

Original Part Number 64 11 8 383 835
Replacement Part Number 64 11 6 923 204

Tell them that there is a battery drain problem and the Air con appears to stay on after ingnition off, tell them this is down to a design fault on the final stage resistor which needs replacing with the newer updated unit which was fitted standard on later models (quote old & new part numbers above) - that should do the trick

:iagree:

Mine was doing the same thing. I told my dealer about the battery drain and fan running. They took it in right away. It was covered under my CPO warranty.

....by the way MC when you remove the keys from the ignition can you hear the air-con fan is still on? If this is the case then its defo the final stage resistor

Perfect....exactly the info I needed. My battery light is now coming on and the battery was changed twice. The shifter LED will not turn off and the dealer wont perform any test because I have aftermarket audio equip. added on.

Im going to have them replace the alternator and resistor before changing the battery again.

Anything else that can prevent it from going to "sleep" mode? I've yanked out the audio equip to rule out the A/V but the shifter light remains on.

shifter light normally is on, at least in both my 2001 & 2006 - the X5 is just an electrical hog - Always good habit to turn everything off before turning off the ignition - the computer & alarm are always on, so there's always a draw on the battery

Shift light goes out on my '01 after the usual 20-30 minute delay. Have a chargeing system test performed at Advanced Auto or the like. It's free and will tell you if you need a battery, alternator or both. Makes no sense to just throw parts at something in the hope it fixes it.
