Projector Fog Lights

What's up guys? I was walking through a parking lot on my way to my car a few days ago and I happend to notice another X5. I also noticed that it had projector fog lights installed in the factory location. They didn't look aftermakret at all. Does anyone know where I can get these projector foglights?

Thanks in advance.

i think they must be stock, mine seem projector because of the lens in front, but they not hid.....I have seen some newer x5s where there isnt a lens.

I'm pretty sure they are factory projector foglights too. I just can't find any info as to what models they were offered on. All I know is that they were fitted on a Pre-Facelift E53. I plan on installing an aftermarket HID kit into my fogs and if I can get my hands on the projector fog lights, I would much rather install the HIDs in those rather than my normal reflector housing fog lights.

In USA, all fog lights are not with projectors (correct me if I am wrong) and use H11 bulbs, but in EU or other places, all pre-facelifted X5s' fog lights are with projectors and use H3 bulbs. If you want to replace them with projectors, go to 'for sale' forum, a member is selling his fog lights with projector.

Mine has the projector looking fogs and uses an H3 bulb.

X5Dawg: Do you know what part# your fog lights are?

X5Dawg 06-06-2007 09:27 AM

This might not be what you consider projector, but I do.

Anyway, here is my fog: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...96&hg=63&fg=15

The picture shows an H11 bulb, but in the list below the pic it shows an H3 available - that is what I have.

I believe that all X5s up through 2003 use the H11 fog bulb I just these LED bulbs they looked wicked and do not throw off any heat even though they are rated at 100 watts but only draw 1.5 watts:

IPF LED X Bulb: Superwhite 9006
Bulb Type:
9006 Sold As: Twin Pack [Pair]
Wattage [draw]: 1.5
Wattage [output]: 100
Color: SuperwhiteColor
Temp: 4800K
Warranty: 90 Days

IPF Super Light Emitting Diode bulbs are the newest thing on the market. With only a 1.5 watt draw the LED technology allows for a bright light with none of the heat. IPF LED bulbs are manufactured to match perfectly with OEM HID headlights when used in fog lights. IPF LED bulbs are manufactured with top quality materials, and feature a 90 day warranty. Made in Japan.

For the record, here are pics to what I'm referring to.

Non-Projector Foglights

Projector Foglights

I'd like to get my hands on a set of Projector foglights as I plan on installing an HID Drop-In Kit into my fogs and a projector would offer a much better beam pattern than in the non-projector foglight housing.

GiRARDsays 06-06-2007 08:21 PM

for those of you that require H3 bulbs for your fogs, do you guys have Non-Projector or Projector fog lights?

My friend and I were talking about it and we were thinking maybe the ones that use H11 bulbs are the non-projector type and the ones that use H3 are the projector type.

Sedoy 06-06-2007 11:20 PM

Interesting, here is H3s only $20!

1.5W LED = 45-50 Lm vs. 1000 Lm = standard halogen H3 bulb. So Halogen ~ 20 times brighter.

JayX5 06-07-2007 12:24 AM

Yeah the LEDs are just for show. My bro fitted them in his gs430's fogs and they look bright but don't light up the road at ALL!

cool. anyone else want to chime in so I can determine if my theory is correct?

JayX5 06-07-2007 12:08 PM

I belive 03s have the non projector fogs and therefore require h11. Pre 03 have the projector fogs.

:iagree: exactly

2000-2002s have H3 with projector lenses

2003+ have H11 reflective housings

zypheR911 07-04-2007 10:52 PM

haha, why would they downgrade :p

AlpineMsix 07-04-2007 11:27 PM

what bout the facelift X5's? Can the projector fogs be used for the facelift x5s?

I don't think so.

Sedoy 07-05-2007 12:10 AM

Yes. I saw 4.8is in Moscow last year with stock projectors.

Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong but aren't projectors designed to throw light deep like our headlights rather than wide? I don't consider these lights to be fog lights although I use them in the fog, but rather driving lights which are designed to put out a shallow but wide beam. I benifit most from these driving lights on a poorly lit roads, curvy mountain roads, etc.

Although the projectors would look great, are they as practical?

the reason i think theyd be practical.. at least for me is because i have xenon fogs and im sure the xenon fogs just throw scattered light everywhere, instead of being projected at one spot

Yup, that's correct! My 2002 has projectors as in attached photo (I apologize for the dirty bumper!). When one of the factory bulbs burnt out, I replaced them with Sylvania bulbs which are H3 bulbs. Anyone have any experience with the Sylvania bulbs - are they decent bulbs? They seem to work well for me but I'm curious if there's anything better out there for about $20 each (as I paid for the Sylvanias).

AlpineMsix 07-05-2007 05:41 PM

does anyone know if the 2002 fog housings will fit an 05 4.8is? I want that projector fog housing!

Sedoy 07-05-2007 08:18 PM

No. The projector reflector gathers as much light as possible so that it passes above the cutoff shield and gets evenly spread out by the curved lens. Projectors provide wider, more evenly distributed beam. But most important part about the projector is the lens diameter, X5 fog projectors have pretty small lenses so you don’t see any illumination improvement over the reflectors. But I recommend projectors for any HID systems to protect upcoming traffic.

That's why I will never buy those chinese headlights with crappy projectors. E39/E53 projectors made by Hella one of the largest and the best projectors ever made.

Yes they will fit. ;)
