Whistling noise fixed
1 Attachment(s)
It was the intake adjustor. Replaced it. Unplug the electronic connected. Remove the torx bolt....replace with new intake adjustor and rebolt and replug. No more whistle.
Interestingly enough, my low end torque is much more powerful. Hmmm...I guess the intake adjustor makes a difference. It is part of the variable intake system which allows more low end torque with choosing the longer intake pathway @ the lower RPM and more HP @ the higher RPM with shorter pathway (better breathing!) The part cost $150! See part#7.... |
Would that be part 7? :dunno:
|
Yes, part#7...$150 is the intake adjustor. No more high-pitched loud whistling @ idling.
Compared to my original part, it looks like the newer part has been slightly redesigned to prevent leaking of air. Quote:

The thing is we get a loud whistling too. A little bit a idle, but as soon as you give throttle you can hear it, it soo loud. I thought it was a consensus that it was a normal sound. :dunno: Which engine do you have?
|
2001 X5 3.0i.
Hmmm, sound clip? :dunno: Anyhow, you must have a leak somewhere in the air intake system. BTW, I never did get a SES light but noticed that the engine throttle response was a little sluggish until I got it fixed (I thought it was due to the 121K miles). Quote:

Kewl, did you get this sound mostly under load or at all times? I want to be sure i have a problem before going to the dealer. I dont know how to host a sound clip. :dunno:

Sorry for the long delay....didn't see your post until now...
You could the hear the loud, high-pitched whistling at most with idling and low rpm....once you got going, the whistling seemed to disappear. I think the whistling disappeared as there was a higher flow of air going through the intake system.... There was definitely a leak and if I put my finger by the rubber gasket area, the whistling noise would disappear. Quote:

is this the same whistling sound discussed here?
|
Before replacing the part did you get a whistle with high iddling at the same time?
|
Another fix here (check the last post)which fixed my problem just incase. chubyball - mine did'nt whistle on idle, just on the initial acceleration and when maintaining speed.
|
Kewl, where is this intake adjuster located in my engine. I have a 4.4i 01. Thanks.. I tried to find it in realoem but no such luck.
|
Should be located on the same place as part #7 on the first post. As for ordering it, there is no place online that i know you can order it from. You may have to go to the dealer to order this part.
|
No, what meant was, can I change this part myself? And if so, where can I find it in the engine so that I can go ahead and DIY.....
|
i have that sound...
sounds like the waters running upstairs, only when the accelerator is depressed, let off , goes away, like a vacuum leak? is that what your hearing?
|
THanks for this link. I have this problem. I was worried that it was a cracked exhaust manifold. I think that I can deal with this problem. Except more money.
I have no experience working on this car. I more used to my old 86 porsche. How difficult is this to repair? |
Is the whistle noise like the one in this video at the start where he is revving the engine?
YouTube - BMW X5 4.4 V8 very fast car |
No did not sound like that.

I have the same exact noise/symptoms coming from the same are on the engine. when you idle there is noise, when you rev a little the noise goes away. I'm gonna try this. |
Just noticed this thread. I think this is what my X is doing. Ever since I got it it had a slow reaction to pressing the gas. I started a thread on it but got nowhere. But I seem to have the same wistle at idle and light pressure on the gas. I'm gonna try replacing this and see what happens.
