Man, I was feelin bad for you until I saw it was warrantied - pay your $50, get it fixed, and drive the $#!+ out of it!!! :thumbup:

2003 4.6L transimission replaced at 37k, just last month. Replaced with a rebuilt xmission as well, not "new." It basically means an old shell with new internals - at least that's what I was told. I can live with that, as long as my xmission lasts for the rest of the vehicle's life.

BMW told me that they had multiple torque converter fault codes and that BMW NA told them to replace it. Prior to it being replaced, I noticed vibrations when driving in the 20-30 mph area and a 'rumble' noise pretty much all the time. Both of these conditions seem to have disappeared with the "new" tranny. My fingers are crossed...

Keep in mind that your "new" transmission is warrantied for 2 years parts/labor from the date of installation.

I don't agree with what everyone is saying about 01's and 02's have all the problems, X5world doesn't hold every X owner in the world. But I can say this, doesn't matter what year you have, its all about how you drive it, and just pure luck. That's just my MO....

The dealership i go to is Thompson BMW in doylestown Pa. and i have'nt heard anything great about them since i've been going there. I think from here on out i'll take it to west german BMW wich is a bit of a haul but if they treat me and my X right it's worth it. No i did not notice anything wrong with the trans. except the fore mentioned things i originaly posted. It just happened suddenly. I don't know about you guy's but for a trans. to go bad at 72k miles does not say alot for BMW but i'm trying to get past it because i really do love my X ! I'm just very suprised I mean my parents have a conversion van with 250k on it with the original trans. I guess just a case of bad luck. At least you are lucky you had the transmission fail within warranty and that BMW will cover it. Most BMW automatics tend to fail around 100k, but cases like yours aren't unheard of. And yes, the replacement transmissions are rebuilt ones, not brand new.

BMWs were kinda sorta really meant for manual transmissions............(here come the flames). Their automatics are a bit finicky and unpredictable. Some fail at 70k, while others go on past 200k. But most go south around 100k.

I have a 2001 4.4 and my alternator went 1st week. ($1100)
About a month later had to replace rotors and pads. ($1600)
5 months after that tranny rebuild (112000 kms)by independant cause
I couldnt afford dealer to do it. ($5200)
And a week and a half ago there was flooding in my city and to get to my house I had to drive through standing water about 2-3 feet deep. Ever since I drove through the tranny goes into FailSafe every other day.

Try getting under and drying out the tranny wiring harness/connectors. Also have the tranny fluid changed.

That is horrible luck man.
