Battery disconnect
 

Can anyone tell me if there is a negative battery cable disconnect under the hood? I have tried a couple of searches and can’t find the info.

There is no battery disconnect under the hood. The negative (ground) connect is under the spare tire in the rear. Generally, to remove power one disconnects the positive terminal. Why do you want to disconnect the negative?

That’s the way I was taught by a mechanic to disconnect/reconnect a battery. Negative off first, on last, no sparks.

drs..... you are correct!

When working on a car, I generally disconnect the positive terminal to avoid any sparks. If you just disconnected the negative, you would still draw a spark to ground as the positive is still alive throughout the car. As for removing the negative first, I can't see how that would draw less of a spark?

Not sure I understand your logic, as once the negative battery post is disconnected the positive is not alive, there is no complete circuit.

Assume a negative-ground vehicle (which is a pretty safe assumption, these days):

1) If you remove the positive cable first, while you are loosening the positive terminal your wrench may contact the chassis and draw a spark. Once the cable is off, you are clear.

2) If you remove the negative cable first, there is no danger if your wrench results in a short to ground, since the cable is grounded in any case. Once the cable is fully removed, you are clear.

I have been an electrican for over 20 years now and you always remove the neg first. When I'm lazy and remove the B+ first its always on the back of your mine not to short out the spanner or wrench. NEG first always. I have never seen sparks disconnecting B+ or NEG unless your running a CAP for the sound system, well that is another story.
