So I'm stopped at a light in traffic. I look in my rear view mirror and see a woman on her cell phone coming up behind me at about 25 mph and I know she can't stop in time. No one was hurt, except she needed a tow truck ride home.

yay, crumple zones.

Are you alright? No whiplash or back issues? I'd make sure because those kinds of injuries are hard to detect at first.

I've always had the impression a lot of American cars (especially the old ones) were a lot of hollow metal with nothing inside them to absorb impact. What happened to you is a lot like what I saw when a new Mustang rear ended a 328xi sport wagon. Mustang heavily damaged, 328xiT broken taillights and dented bumper.

More crumple zones in front so more frontal damage.

i hope you're okay

when you saw the car coming from behind thinking imminent hit, did you hold your brakes, push down harder, or ease off?

I'm fine thanks. I do a lot of high impact sports, downhill skiing, mountain biking, etc. so the jolt was less than I am used to. When I saw the car coming my only thought was "hope the air bags don't blow"!

nice.....

I'm glad everybody is o.k. Seems like both cars protected the drivers the way there were suppose to.

You're ok, the X is repairable. Not too bad.

Looks like she tried to swerve left to avoid you but didn't make it. She might have made it if:
a) She was using 2 hands to steer. I'll bet she still had the cell phone in her hand after impact.
b) The Tahoe didn't handle like a boat.
c) She didn't have the brakes slammed as she tried to turn.
