New to the board

Hi everyone,
Just wanted to say a quick hello as I'm new to BMW's and the X5. I recently purchased a 2001 X5 4.4i SP with about 35k miles on it to replace my Toyota Tundra. I was finding the lack of passenger space overwhelmed my need to tow things and haul things in the bed, so I opted for an SUV (SAV, I reckon). I've had a lot of different cars over the years, and I'm very happy so far with my new X5.

I'm about to take the X5 to the dealer for the first time for a few fixes and I was wondering if I should have them do anything else while I'm there. Here's what I need to have done:

1) Left headlamp has condensation in it
2) Driver door has loud rattle over bumps.

That's all that I can figure the dealer will actually fix, but I have a few more things I might ask them about. Any input you all can provide would be great.

1) Chips in interior door pulls (the FAQ's say to talk to the dealer, will they actually replace them?)
2) The wood finish in the passenger front door is cracked. I can't imagine how such a well-cared for car would have this happen. Can this be a workmanship defect?

Are there any TSB's I should have them do while I'm there? The dealer is The BMW Store in Cincinnati, OH if anyone has any experience that would be great!

Look forward to hearing back,
Scott

Don't know if yours is still under warranty, but if it still is, dealer should fix those issues for you. I've seen posts regarding the wood cracks, and dealer replaced them. Make sure that your X5 is up to date on recalls and TSB's while you're there. You could also ask them to run a service history on your X5 and see what had been done to it.

Oh, almost forgot, congrats on your new drive and welcome to the club!

Welcome aboard!!! You'll fall in love with your car more and more every day...  As for the issues on the car, Iflyx5 has basically said it all. I am not sure about the wood crack, but I know for sure they will replace your door handles...well for that matter what they replace is actually your whole interior door panel. :D I had to do that a couple of times. But enjoy your new ride.

Welcome aboard. I think that your avatar requires some explanation and accompanying pictures. There are several current and former P-Car owners, myself included, who would like to see more.

Welcome!!! Was the Turbo avatar all about though?

Welcome scott! A lot of the questions you asked are already answered on the front page here! Be sure to check it out!

Condensation is a failure of the plastic housing on the light assembly. Common to very early X5s. Check for cracks in the housing. If no cracks, then its a leak. Here is a quick and dirty fix for this.

To be honest, if there is nothing else wrong, you might want to consider a mod to add Angel Eyes to your lights. Check out the lighting section on this board. It will give you an opportunity to open and then reseal your lights, and bring your car up to date. Unfortunately, those of us pre-facelit and post 2002 cannot open our lights due to the new glue they used to prevent this [although rumors abound that people have been able to open 03 lights without destroying them -- i have yet to read/see a fully documented feat of this accomplishment or instructions to do so]...

The door handle paint problem is common and not related to wearing rings which is what your dealer will tell you. My '01 4.4 did the same thing and I am still not married and don't wear rings... Noise in the door/rattle=something is loose. Also another easy DIY if you are up to it and car not under warranty.

The wood cracking is common as well especially to early build X5s. Again, its a fight with your dealer to get them to change/fix it option if its under warranty. If not, you can do it yourself.

Good luck!

Hi PNG,
Sorry, I guess I should change my Avatar, it's just what I have been using of late! I'm more of a Porsche junkie than anything else, with my current ride being a 2002 911 Turbo. It's midnight blue with natural grey leather interior...if it weren't for the winters and having to have a "practical" car, I would drive it all the time!

Once I figure out how to post pics on here, I'll post a few of the turbo. :)

Hey Motor David;

Is that Alldata info for avaliable for all X5's? Can anyone access it? If so can you do a new post for us to access?

Appreciate it.
