New spark plugs, what a difference
 

Following the valuable DIY instructions somewhere in this forum, I've decided to replace the spark plugs, something that was long due (91K miles on a 2001 3.0). What a difference ! I went with the OEM (NGK about $ 15 ea) but the car runs like new. Smooth, starts right away, has more power and I do not hear a tic tic noise I used to hear when at idling RPM's.

The only thing I did that was not mentioned in the tips was spraying a bit of silicone dielectric spray on the connectors to the plugs (no clue the technical name for it, but they are those long rubber things that go into the plug).


I did notice though that when I removed the plastic cover all the components inside where clean as a whistle, not even a hint of dust (even the inside of the cover was super clean). The plugs where 100% free of oil or any fluids, just seemed like rusted, but I think it is simply from regular wear. (see pics). I am happy to see that the engine is still clean at this mileage. Did replace the air filter too and the micro filter (the latter was incredibly dirty).

I wish I would have done this long time ago, maybe at about 65 / 70K miles, and that's why I am posting this, just as a suggestion to those wondering if they should replace the plugs only at 100K. Easy job to do too.

Spark Plug replacement
 

Just ordered mine from Bavauto. I have 98500 on mine. Also got a couple of oil filters and brake fluid. Should be in tomorrow. I need to pick up some die electric grease. No tapping noise but sluggish when taking off. Want to use the fuel injector cleaner posted in the forum to.

Let me know how it goes with the injector cleaner. I am not questioning the other member's experience, but I have always been a little hesitant of using these type of products.

Great job!! I replaced the sprak plugs on my 4.6is at 15k!! and will be doing so at every 15k, probably a little extreme I know; but I like to keep on top of things.

how hard is it to change the plugs. Im sure there are plenty of articles on here but im lazy.

replaced the original plugs @ 105k miles. didn't feel anything.

Is it really that important to put the die electric grease on the plugs?

The electric grease is applied to the thread to make it easier to remove in the future. I think it is important to avoid cracking the plug when you want to remove it causing a bigger problem.

no. you don't put dialetic (sp?) grease on the thread. that's for the electrical contact points.


you should put anti-seize compound on the threads.
