Yes, there is a holder that attaches to the bumper for mounting the front license plate. I have one laying around (MD sent it to me many many moons ago) that I no longer need.

imola: Yeah it's gonna take a pair, or two of holes...
on my '01, it took 2 pair; not familiar w/new models.
These are tiny holes. GL,md

If I can find it, it's yours.

While I don't drive an X5, I also didn't want to drill holes in the front of my bumper. I made a front license plate bracket that mounts from the bottom. It looks like this:

You should be able to adapt this design to your X5 - details on how it was made are here .

Cool solution - I'm not a big fan of making holes in the bumper either :tsk:

Have you looked in the spare tire well? Mine is located there on the left side of the spare under the cargo floor.

That's a very clean and creative solution. The E46 M3's are the worst since the holes would be so visible and so damaging. My dealer knew better and as a rule, did not install the front plate on any E46 M3 unless they cleared it with the customer. They did however, drill two holes in my X5 bumper. I believe that as of June 1st, here in California, a car dealer can be fined if they sell a car without a front license plate holder. This type of rig would be a nice option.

You don't have to make holes and put the front plates. I did not and I know several others who have also not mounted the front plate. I just told the dealer to give me the holder and not make any holes.

is there a part number or anything for that, or will they just have it?

Dealer will give you the plate holder if you ask not to put it. Its up to you if you want to put it or not. The part # 51117129858 (LICENCE PLATE BASE)

I've looked and looked and can't put my hands on it. It seems to have been misplaced in our move from Chicago to Michigan. Sorry....
