Auto to Manual Shift

If you drive in Manual mode and you are in 3rd gear can you just shift back to automatic drive? Will that harm the tranny? I have a 2003 3.0 automatic with manual shift option

No, it will nearly always be easier on the vehicle to be in automatic mode. Just move the shift lever over.

The transmission is programmed to not let you do anything that would potentially harm the transmission.

Moving from manual to automatic at any time is perfectly fine.

Is this BMW info or your opinion?? I put 100,000 miles on a 01 4.4 and have over 80,000 miles on a 04 4.4 sport and have used the manual mode I would guess 98 percent of the time and have not had any transmission problems at all. I would be interested to know where you got your info.

Inthe manual mode if you don't shift at a reasonable RPM then it will shift for you as a defult, so your in control but not? Know what I mean?
