Second car: Thinking 2001,02,03 x5 3.0i
Hi all
I am currently looking for a 2nd car for my fiance. I am considering another 1st generation e53 3.0i. Looking for some advice on the following: 1) I have a 2001. Does the build quality improve noticeably in 2002 or 2003? So far, I've replace a control arm, water pump and belt, crank angle sensor, brakes, sway bar end. Maybe $2000 in repairs, most done under warranty. Is this normal? 2) I am targeting paying 18-22K for the x5. I am guess I am looking for advice whether to own one of these out of warranty or not. Thanks! |
I have an '01 with 120K miles on it and plan on running it into the ground. Only things I have replaced are one window motor and the AC final stage resistor. I have a faulty fuel gauge right now, but instead of spending the money to fix it, I just keep an eye on my mileage.
I say go for it - this is an awesome vehicle!!! |
The 03's are definitely more reliable.

another vote for 2003, these are probably more reliable, and the interior is certainly nicer with the new dakota leather. The 2003 was the best year for the pre 2004 E53. I'm sure you could find one in good condtion with about 45,000 miles on it for about 22. Good luck!

that's about what I've done on my 2001 since owning it in 6/05, but the last 10K has been problem free - I,too, have a sticky fuel sensor, but it corrects itself with a restart - I think I've replaced all the "normal" weak points that the previous owners ignored - runs great
