Power Steering Fluid
I know it says on the reservoir cap but ATF but hat means Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF). Should the X5 be using ATF or actual Power Steerng Fluid? Little lost.
Which one should I buy? |
Yes it is ATF not power steering fluid. Some people use Dexron III from Castrol... some use Amsoil, some Mobile 1.

I've looked on the home page and I didnt see a step by step procedure on driaing and filling Power Steering FLuid.
Any help is appreaciated. |
I am not aware of a step-by-step for a drain and refill. However, a lot of us just used a turkey baster to remove as much of the old fluid as possible right out of the reservoir. This is the quick and easy way to refresh the power steering system. Once it is empty, fill it up with fresh ATF. This will give you about 75% new fluid as some old fluid will stay in the rack and lines. After a week of driving, repeat the procedure of drawing out the ATF and once again fill it with fresh, quality ATF. Now you have replaced 95%+ of the fluid and didn't have to dismantle anything to do it other than unscrewing the reservoir cap.
This takes only 5 minutes and the baster will cost about $2 at the grocery store. Disclaimer: DO NOT BASTE A TURKEY WITH THIS BASTER! THROW IT AWAY :) |

Ok I just took out most of the ATF oil out of the reservoir with a Turkey Baster :-) and refilled until top of the line with Castrol ATF Dexron III. The old fluid is more like REd Grapes looking than the new Cherry Red looking ATF.
Day one so 4 more days of doing the procedure. Thanks to all your comments. Now lets see if the squeaking noise will be gone! |
Good luck. Some people will suck out the fluid (the 2nd time) after a few minutes, some will wait a few days. Either way, you are doing a good thing for your baby ;)
