LOWERED MY 4.6

Well finally got aound to doing this. I went with the eibach springs up front and DIS lowering for the rear. Its a 30mm drop all round and I have to say the ride is still good! Its very slightly harder and I find cornering more responsive but aside from that its just the same. As I'm not the tallest of people, another bonus is that entry and exit of the X is much easier an takes more stress off the seat lumbar. I have a few pics but as it was a dull, rainy day they aint the best, but I'll get some better ones done shortly. Pics dont it just anyway.

Looks really good! This is a mod I have been debating. I would love to see either a pic of a lowed X next to a stock height X or see it in person.

ncx 09-04-2007 04:48 PM

Looks great. I am glad you didn't try lower it down as far as possible. I hate that slammed look on a really classy auto.
Enjoy.

I can do that for you, my dad and my cousin both have 4.6's too, theirs are stock, so will get pics done tomorrow.

Yeah the 30mm drop is just right, plus the camber is still good, wheels sit well from the rear and front and ride is still comfortable. All in all, well worth the money! Was a fairly in-expensive conversion, front springs cost me £100UK and the BMW dealer charged me £120 for fitting the springs and £20 to lower the rear!

streetsoffire 09-04-2007 04:56 PM

Sudesh: It looks a whole lot better with the drop. I went with H&R sport springs, but the results are the same ------- hunkered-down and mean. Now ya gotta lost the roof-rails my friend.......

Thanks for the comments! I was playing with that idea but undecided if I like the roof rail delete. I need to see loads more pics from various angles to get a feel for it. I'm not finished with the mods yet, I just received a set of M5 mirrors today that I'm hopefully going to mod to fit the X, I'm also working on having a "facelift look"; without the huge expense.

streetsoffire 09-04-2007 05:18 PM

Sudesh: I'll tell ya what: Try to get in contact with PeteM. His E53 was black with lots of mods (tasteful thou), and the roof-rails gone was one of them........and as everyone knows, his E53 was prolly the best looking thing (gotta be 1 or 2) on this site.......I can't find photos of that beauty anymore.......
If you delete the rails it cleans the X up real nice; that coupled with the drop ------- you won't be able to take your eyes off that baby.......

Sudesh 09-04-2007 05:22 PM

Yeah I know PeteM from this site and the UK site. I think he has chaged his e53 to and e70 now as I seen some pics of the new car. Must drop him a message to see if he has any pics of the roof rail delete.

Very nice Sudesh. Mild but noticeable difference:thumbup:

Sudesh 09-04-2007 07:02 PM

Thanks George! It looks mild in the pics but when its beside a stock X there is quite a difference. I'll get some pics up tomorrow beside a stock 4.6

fiber46is 09-05-2007 02:25 PM

Looks great. I've been thinking of doing the same. So you have the stock shocks still on ?

Sudesh 09-05-2007 02:43 PM

Yeah! I just replaced the front springs then lowered the rear via the DIS method. Been driving it for a ood part of today and I'm very pleased with how comfortable it is. Plus it looks so much better and easier to enter and exit!

Sudesh: What's the best way for me to remove the "X5" emblem from my boot-lid? I love how clean your X is sans emblem.......

Sudesh 09-05-2007 04:57 PM

What I did was heat the badge up with a heat gun and then, with some fishing line, slide it behind the badge and glide the line through in and up and down motion cutting away the adesive pad and it peeled off nicely. You could use a hair dryer also; Just be careful not to burn your fingers or the paint.

paddyh747 01-21-2009 05:39 PM

zerochief 01-21-2009 08:41 PM

You can buy one on Ebay for about a $1000 plus, take it to the dealer or find and independent that has one.http://shop.ebay.com/?_from=R40&_trk...All-Categories

The DIS is not a lowering module, it is the dealers diagnostic system.

Mahmud5 01-21-2009 08:59 PM

wow that is very nice! the x is so low !!

chilliwilli 01-22-2009 12:08 AM

Sudesh 01-22-2009 12:20 PM

lol!! OK to answer all your questions,

That was my first 4.6is, I dont have that now but do have another black 4.6is with slightly more spec than that car.

PaddyH747:

Hi and welcome to the club! I'm based outside Derry in N.I, where are you loacated?

You can take your X5 to any of the dealers to be lowered. Depending on what X5 you have, you will either need springs for all round, or springs for the front and rear lowered by DIS at the dealer, but only if you have self leveling rear suspension.

I purchased my Springs from Motor Sport & Spares in Ballymena. Nice guys to deal with, ask for Harold and say Sudesh sent you.

Something also thats worth doing is taking a copy of how the self leveling suspension is lowered by DIS, as the dealers here dont really know the self levelling suspension can be lowered this way. I printed out a copy from this forum and just handed it to the service guys and explained how I wanted the car to sit.

Chilliewillie:
Thanks for the coments! on my head lights, I actually removed the standard orange bulb and replaced with a silver one that blinks orange when used. I also covered over the orange corner with some silver vinyl and that is why the headlights look the way they do. My X5 is a late 2003 car so the lights couldnt be split to to do any internal mods, so I ended up going that route and it did turn out nice and for only a few $$$ and yet that is a camer in the hitch cover.

Thanks everyone else for the comments.

Sudesh 01-22-2009 12:38 PM

Sorry Chillie,

The aerial on the roof is for the OEM built in cordless phone, not sure if you guys get that in the US or other countries.

What you basically do is pop a sim card into the internal system which activates the handsfree phone in the X5, the aerial is a signal booster so if you get out of the X5 it allows you to have a larger reception if you walk away from the vehicle and using the cordless handset.

I guess its kinda like the a cordless home phone.

Hi,

Yeah most likely is! A guy that works for me does all my adds and puts alot of stuff on there and other forums and websites etc.

But I dont think I'll bother selling now as prices here have fallen terribly both UK/N.I; and I dont see any point in blowing it out for silly money as I would only replace it with an Imola red 4.8is anyway. So I'm thinking of keeping in now and face lifting it to the 4.8is. I may have my OEM 20's for sale so keep in touch.

paddyh747 01-25-2009 03:57 PM

Imola red has to be the nicest possible colour for the x5.
