Wheel Hub Centric Rings
How do I know if I have them besides taking a wheel off? I went from Style 58 18" OEM to Style 177 20" Aftermarket Replica's. The guy who did the install said he didn't use rings, but I wonder if there were some already there?
Are there different size rings for different size rims!? I have heard that OEM style rims (and replicas) are not hub-centric so they require rings. Is this true? Confused. |
I believe they are different for different rims. I installed them on my 87s.
|
ugh... oh well screw it they are coming off for powder coating anyway.
|
so why are rings needed for OEM style rims? Is it because this style was intended for newer x5's? I am not quite understanding and people are giving me mixed information here.
Aren't rings for aftermarket rims NOT oem? |
The newer X5's hub size might be different and that's why hub rings are required to center the wheel properly on the hub.
The rings are not only for aftermarket wheels. I had to install rings on my 88 M3 when I went with E39 Style OEM wheels as the hub size was slightly different. |
Awesome, thats what I was wondering. Though I'm still not certain if I need them based on what the installer said, which was basically they only install them if necessary. My guess is that they are the same hub size but I will have the shop take a closer look when they get mounted back up again.

It's amazing what you can find when you search!!
http://www.xoutpost.com/x5-e70-forum/...?highlight=hub Someone should make this sticky in the tire section or something. I need measure my rim hub sizes to make sure they are in spec. They should be the larger bore size of 74.1 for the e70 style 177 20" rims. Does anyone even make rings that small? Is that negligable enough, 1.54mm or could that difference cause some vibration at highway speeds still? I may have a balancing issue. |
|
Tire Rack carries them. Looks like that's BMW standard. I had to buy the same for my M3 (74-72.56mm). Tire Rack part# A670 and they are $3.00 ea.
|
good to know, are they plastic or aluminum? Does it really matter? That 1010 place wants like 33 bones.
