Took 16 odd hours on the BMW computer at the $tealers to program my new LKM.
Before going that route I would go to Advanced Auto or the like and have them check the battery and charging system. Most do it for free and sell a very good replacement battery if needed.

The battery is new. But these issues started about 2 weeks after the replacement battery was installed. My friend who has a garage does have the snap-on computer that hooks up to the obdII connection. He paid an extra $1500 for the european package, so hopefully I might be able to do something with that. I won't be going to the dealer for any help. At $90/hour * 16 hours = trade in the POS.

I have a 2001 x5 3.0. I have been have a strange electrical problem that comes and goes. When the problems happens, I lose the Air condition, the air blows, but not cold. The radio goes out completely, no power or clock at all. The reverse lights and the heated seats don't work. The turn signals work on the outside, but don't flash or click on the dash. If you open a door, the indicator on the dash doesn't work. Also, the rain sensor wipers won't work, the wipers just work in normal mode. Also, I lose the ability to use the keyless entry and alarm. I have to insert the key to lock and unlock the vehicle.

The coming and going usually happen when the vehicle is parked and turned off. I will start it up and sometimes it has all features working, other times, nothing will work. Speaking with the dealer was useless. They basically wanted a blank check to troubleshot the issues. They told me that there must be a short in the dash and it needs to come out completely for them to search for a problem. At $90/hour, I don't need a dealer abusing me like they have done in the past.

Sometime the issue will be for days at a time, then start working for days. But lately, it has been mostly not working.

Thanks in advance, Dave

Dave,
What was the final fix? I am experiencing the same problem, and am reluctant to take it to the dealer until I have an idea of what's wrong.
Thanks colin.

Well, I guess that the computer just needed to be reset. I disconnected the battery again and let the vehicle sit for a few hours while I did some running around. I connected the battery back up and within a few hours, the vehicle was working completely fine again. I have not had any problems since then, about 4-5 months ago. I guess that originally I just didn't leave the battery disconnected long enough. Good luck!

Dave,
Disconnected the battery negative terminal for a couple of hours, reconnected and all seems to be OK. Just had to reset time and date. Must have been an electrical spike through the electrical system that the computer didn't like. Either that or my 3yo battery is on the way out.
Thanks again,
Colin.

Thanks again,

Mine started about a week or two after my battery went bad. I never connected the dots until I read on the board about resetting the computer. It reset after my battery went bad, but something went wrong and needed to be reset again. Glad that you fixed the problem.
