DSC, Brake & ABS warning lights yellow
 

I have a 2002 X5 3.0 Sport w/ 52K which I have had for about two months. I just had the Inspection II done today (for peace of mind) at an indi and the car checked out terrific. :)

My DSC, Brake & ABS warning lights have been on yellow and the indi said their computer checks everything out ok. The brake pads are brand new (BMW parts). He suggested it may be a sensor or relay and I should take it to the dealer to have them do their diagnostics.

I made an appointment (can you believe the earliest is August 18th) for service at the dealer. Both the indi and the dealer assured me it's ok to drive.

Anyone have any suggestions as to what is causing this and how I can remedy? :dunno:

If the battery has been disconnected recently, that is usually the issue. Try to disconnect the battery for a few tics and let the stored energy drain. Hook the battery back up in about 1/2 hour or so. Once you start the X up, the lights will still be on...go for a short drive and they should go out in less than a mile of driving. If this doesn't work, keep your appointment with the stealer. It doesn't sound like anything major....Phil

I use to have a 89 535i and twice I had a problem with the acceleration. When you would step on it the car would lunge forward then hesitate. After much testing we resolved that problem by disconnecting the battery and computer and letting the car sit for an hour. Almost like a reboot.

So with the car off your suggestion is to just disconnect the battery and let it sit for a bit?

I tried unplugging the battery with no success. Thanks for the suggestion anyway. :thumbup:

I called the dealer and scheduled a service appointment (earliest was three weeks forward).

Left the car on a Thursday. The dealer could not get to the car that day. Received a Camry as a loaner. :mad:

Friday they diagnosed the problem. The steering angle sensor needed to be replaced. I ok'd the work and the dealer later called stating they could not finish the work that day. They kept the car over the weekend (even though the do offer weekend service).

Today (Monday) I got my X back. Fixed and $640 lighter in the pocket.

More than likely it is a wheel sensor. I had the same thing happen on my 3.0 X5 and it was just the sensor. I replaced it and it fixed the problem. Now...the problem is determining which sensor it is. If it is the rear left sensor the speedo will not work. The rear right and the cruise will not work. If all of this works then more than likely it is one of the front wheel sensors.

They are very easy to replace however if your car has been up north in the road salt the sensor may be jammed in to the hub. You will have to drill it out if that is the case. carefull drill it out and take compressed (computer cleaner is fine) and blow the shavings out of the hole. It should not take more than about 20 minutes to do each wheel.

on mine this happens everytime I disconnect the battery ,but the lights go away after you drive the car for a few yards ........................................

Pepatrick: Where can I get the (front wheel) sensors?
 

Hi there Pepatrick, where did you get the sensor(s), in my case when the (DSC/ABS) lights are on, everything works fine, I restart the vehicle and the lights are gone for a couple of days anyway. Where can I get these ()front wheel) sensors? and are they easy to replace? I don't want to go to the dealership, do you think the brake shop (where I replaced my front brakes 3-5 months ago) will replace them for me? Any suggestions?

The wheel sensors are not that hard to replace, but you'll need to get the parts from a BMW dealer. Ask Morristown BMW in our Parts forum for a price.
