Rear Tire problem!!!
 

Hello to all, just wondering why the inner part of my rear tires are going so fast versus the middle and outer part? I know the way the suspension is and the tires sit some what in an angle. But is this really normal? Or do I need some sort of an adjustment? Please advise. My tires are Perelli assimentricos and I have probably maybe almost 20k on them. I have an 01 4.4 X5, Sport package. I'm going to have to buy a new rear pair in a few months. Not only that, the driver side rear tire is worn a little more then the passenger side rear. Hope someone can help me and shed some light my way. If this is normal then OK, but if this is not, I need to fix this asap. Thanks in advance. :confused:

My 02 X5 3.0 has done the same thing with the rear tires. Alignments, I've found, don't change the problem. I don't get the uneven wear from the front tires though.

that's why there's more wear towards the inner treads

Neutralize the negative camber | | and rotate the tires every 5,000 miles. The tires will have a longer life!

I took the camber out as far as I could and I have not seen any change in handling. Mind you, my tires are 315's and I do have 30mm spacers so my rear end is quite wide. Not sure if makes a differece. Perhaps one of the more suspension savy guys can answer that.

And the vehicle loses handling. Nissan and the 350Z had a huge problem with tire feathering to the point that Nissan started replacing tires for free. The feathering was a result of camber. The same camber that allowed the car to handle on rails. Once the camber was adjusted, the issue stopped and the handling was degraded.

I just put 20 inch wheels on my x I put it on our alignment rack and took out as much camber as I could and toed it in a little Getting to the bolts to adjust rear toe is not fun and most shops wont do it. if the rear toe is toed out at all along with all the camber it will eat tires also I think it looks much better with less camber handling is no different after changes to me

I bought my 01 3.0i 2yrs ago.... It had new Kumo's on the 19" rims, and I got 18" rims and put pirelli scorpion ice/snow on them.
They are all original alloys that fit the X5.
The new Kumo's on the rear lasted 10000KM..... I noticed they were getting loud so i looked closely at them and the inside edges were worn nearly to the canvas. I had the suspension checked and aligned, bought new rear Kumo's and they only lasted 10000km. I asked the dealer and they know all about the problem. I drove the Pirelli's on the 18" rims (aprox. 1.5" narrower) they have aprox 10000km with nearly no signs of wear. I think the tires are too wide for the suspension alignment. If any one wants a set of these rims i'm selling them.....

If you can't notice a handling difference when you change camber to that degree, then you aren't driving the car to its limits IMO.

So Wagner, what you are saying is that this is normal for the X, and this negative camber is what makes the X handle like its on rails? Is this correct? Then if it is, I'm just going to order a new rear set of pirellis and be done with it. It will cost me like 500 bucks and some change but WTF, a small price to pay for the this beast. Thanks to all for your input...

If you are prepared to pay the $$$ for new tires and do this on a regular fashion, leave the camber as is. If money is a problem, put new tires on and adjust the camber to -1.0 or less. Check your alignment too.
