My X decided to have a make out sess with a pole

So my stupid ass, simply was not looking, dont ask...

airbag deployed even though i was only going like 10mph..

Damage to front bumper, hood, under-ride guard.. no visible leaks of fluid so radiator is not damaged or nothin

Any off the top of the head price estimates on how much this should cost to fix

if i was replacing front bumper, hood, under-ride guard, airbag?

Quicksilver 09-13-2007 03:24 AM

$2000 :dunno: But that's what insurance is for.

Oooouuch!

This little senior moment is gonna cost you! I'm having similar repairs (not as extensive as yours) done on my E70 and the price tag is $4600.00... I know it's a different model, but expect to pay at least this much. Good luck!

vinuneuro 09-13-2007 03:39 AM

A lot, esp since the airbag deployed.

xnsf 09-13-2007 04:31 AM

awww man
ouch...

it looks like a significant amount of components need replacement

mrtm2004 09-13-2007 04:40 AM

Makes you want to cry :bawling:

So sorry to see this...at least you weren't hurt by the airbag deploying!

Michelle 09-13-2007 07:36 AM

OMG!! Ouuuuuuuuuch! My most favorite X has a boo-boo!!

I hope you get everything fixed quickly! :goodluck:

ncx 09-13-2007 07:55 AM

Oh no. Man that sucks but no one is hurt and it is 100% repairable. Maybe time to consider an aftermarket front end? Just a thought.

Good luck!

NOTE TO SELF. Make sure X is in park before getting a BJ.   .

dvs 09-13-2007 11:15 AM

tsk tsk tsk, i'm sure youll never do that again..:banghead:
at least it was a pole and not a pedestrian.

AzNMpower32 09-13-2007 12:33 PM

I don't get it. I've read many incidents where BMWs have had 20, even 30mph frontal and side collisions and the airbag didn't deploy. And now this happens at 10mph? What's with the inconsistency?

Glad you're okay, but the repair bill will be hefty.

chilliwilli 09-13-2007 01:49 PM

So I'm not gonna ask what happened...but I'm sure it must've been some great head! :bustingup

toohotdoc 09-13-2007 01:54 PM

whoa imola, hate to see your X looking like that, at least you okay. So i have heard the airbag can give some shiners/bruises cause of the impact, this theory TRU or FALSE?

2002Silver4.6is 09-13-2007 02:00 PM

Dude!!! That sucks!!! No worries... get her all fixed up and she will be back to normal!!!

I would tell the body shop you want everything that is taken off and not used in the repair. Perhaps you can sell the stuff on Ebay and get back a few bucks.

You could have them paint a new front bumper and install it yourself. Maybe get to keep some of the insurance $$! You could install a new airbag yourself as well. Wondwer what they charge to install one! Takes no time at all. Not sure if anything has to be reset (i.e. computer / triggering mechanism for air bag??)

Not sure if they will just fix the hood.

Obeticus4.6is 09-13-2007 02:01 PM

OUch, looks like at least 4 to 5 grand, It all depends on who does your bodywork if you take it to R&R or Bodyworks in Bellevue it will definately not be cheap. On a good note all your rock chips will be gone :)

dr.jay 09-13-2007 03:15 PM

That sux, I would say about $4-5k

AlpineMsix 09-13-2007 03:26 PM

Ya the inconsistency with the airbags is true... i remembr crashing my e46 330xi at like 30mph twice and the airbags did not deploy... but these went off at like 10-15mph

as far as bumps, bruises or black eyes i got none, only a rash/rug burn type thing on my right arm, but ya ive seen some people look real beat up after an airbag exploded in their face, mine was blocked by my arm.

asawadude 09-13-2007 08:06 PM

Whoa.... sorry to hear about your X5 smacking a pole. I certainly hope that you get it back to near new condition. So how's about a new front end? Maybe a Hamann?

dvs 10-23-2007 08:56 AM

hey imola any updates? hows your X doing?

UncleBob 10-23-2007 01:53 PM

Airbag deployment and speed

to those of you who mentioned the airbag deployment: it depends not on speed but rather rate of deceleration. that pole that he hit is pretty solid so the deceleration was very rapid. if you hit another car at twice or three-times the speed, the other car crunches and moves so the deceleration is spread out over a much longer time period. and don't forget, we're talking only milliseconds here.
