Yes, if I lived in a very northern climate and it was for
the winter season. Otherwise, no; but I'm a fan of thicker
and broader viscosity ratings. I just did a change using
Mobil 1 at the 0W-40 rating, for the first time.

Got the stuff from WalMartNation. At 60K miles, our old
X still runs smooth, but the high rpms with the 5 spd manual,
at cruising speed prompt me to run higher weight than the
5W-30 stuff. My Qtr's up.

The only motor oil I buy and change is the Castrol Syntec 0W-30, and that's put in for the "in-between" services that we do ourselves. Unfortunately with the timing and the way seasons work, the X3 always gets the 0W-30 mid-winter and it uses it thru the summer until early fall, when it gets the BMW-paid oil change.

However, the 325i sport is on the preferred track; oil was changed 2 weeks ago ourselves and the slightly thinner 0W-30 will take us thru the winter.

I've used German Castrol 0w30 here in both the X and the 3er all year round for the last year. I'm very happy with it for the winter, but I'm thinking I will run something a little thicker in the summer next year. If I didn't know better it was getting a little thin on those 30c days....
