First time, first gen., X5 Quesion
 

good afternoon everyone!


As you can see I have just joined and have a question or two about the first gen X5. I have just moved to Cheyenne, WY and am contemplating a move down to Fort Collins, CO. I have been toying with the idea of getting an SUV (or i guess SAV in this case) or a truck because of the lack of ground clearance in my e36 compact and e30 M3 (which I am still looking for). I like the idea of getting an X5 but there are a few necessary options, or lack there of, that I am looking for. The most important being a manual transmission, and consequently a 6 cyl.

Anyhow, now for my #1 question:

I know I am in the severe minority here but: What are my options for raising the suspension/ground clearance in a 1st gen X5?


I know most people buy these to lower them and turn them into beefy looking station wagons but I would like to go in the other direction. I don't necessarily want the articulation but would love the added ground clearance.

haven't heard of any lift kits for it, but i know someone did raise it a little by doing like a more offroad oriented setup by putting on bigger tires, bigger sidewalls, etc. of course speedo will be even more off than already is...

I would just stick with the suspension with the way it rides stock. Add some winter tires and you can honestly crawl through just about anything. Good friend of mine in Denver uses his X5 for only winter weather. Takes it places on the weekend that would scare me. Just be aware of your clearance and you'll be fine.

I personally don't use my X for this, this is when a FJ comes in handy......You can also keep your current stuff and look for a used FJ80. There are plenty out there plus there is a Indi shop just north of Denver that is the bomb.

Where will you be driving?

From what you have said so far, I would choose a differen't car.

The X5 will take you off road but you will be wishing you were in something else.

A couple inches of ground clearance makes a huge difference.

Not sure why the STFU was thrown out there but a Ford or Chevy would be PERFECT and cost a ton less to raise with a lot more options.
