'05 4.4 X5 Transmission issues
I have about 1300 miles on my X5 and I notice that when I have it in sport mode and accelerate quickly, sometimes the RPMs jump up really high without a corresponding increase in acceleration. I also notice in sport mode that sometimes when I accelerate but don't continue stepping down on the accelerator, the RPMs rev high for a few seconds(a lot longer than would seem normal) before coming back down, almost as if the transmission is slipping. I also notice that when I'm driving in regular mode and want to pass someone, I have to floor the accelerator in order to for the transmission to shift down, otherwise it just seems to accelerate slowly in whatever gear it is in. I was wondering if anyone has had these issues with their X5. I've heard of a transmission software upgrade, but when I called the local dealership, they said that there is no such thing...all they do is see if there is a problem and just reprogram it. Maybe I'm just being paranoid, but any info would help. Thanks.

I have a similar thing on my 4.8 sometimes where your accelerating then slowing down, but the car thinks that you want to keep driving quickly. I drive a 996 Turbo S as well and this does the same thing - nothing to worry about.
The high jump in RPM is something I've read about on this forum before. I think it may be the way the valvetronic system works. The valve characteristics change, giving you higher RPM - or something like that!! I'm sure someone can do a better job of explaining it than me!! |
When the rpms stay high in sport mode even when you decelerate it is so that a lower gear can be held, like you would with a manual transmission when taking a corner. Our 2001 3.0i does that too. Personally, i think the 2000-2003 X5s had PERFECT transmision programming.

2004 x5, 4.4 Transmission Slipping - Help
Hi Everyone,
New to x5 world...wondering if anyone is experiencing the following with their x5's...As I slow down to approach a red light and it unexpectedly changes to green...and I subsequently accelerate, I fell the transmission definately rev, and there is a slight half second delay followed by a definate slip followed by accelaration. I have brought it in for service and they can find nothing wrong...I am wondering if anyone out there had a similiar experience. Thanks |
