help: moving SF -> NYC
 

Hi gang,

I live in San Francisco, CA and just got a job offer in NYC. Seriously considering taking it. I want to bring my X5 with me. My question to you guys is, what would be the best way to go?

1) Get a towing hitch installed ($700+) and rent a UHaul trailer ($700) for a total of $1,400
2) Rent a UHaul truck ($1,500) and a Car Trailer ($?), put the X5 on a car trailer and tow her behind the truck (unsure of the price as neither UHaul nor Penske/Budget would quote price as their Car Trailer weight limit is 4k lbs, while x5 is close to 5k lbs)
3) ???

Please advise as to the best way to do it, I am open to suggestions. I don't have much stuff to move, so as far as the truck, I would need roughly a 6'x12' loading area.

ALSO, if anyone can recommend the best route from SF to NYC, I'd appreciate it.

Your X5 can pull upto 6x12 U-haul easily, but it will be a slow ride to NYC as you will be driving at 60 mph max. Given your choices I would do the hitch+trailer.

Where do plan to live once you get to NYC?

The cost of parking in Manhattan is around $350 to $450 a month.

Unless you need your car for work you probably are better off selling it and using rental if and when you need a car.

Won't need the X5 if your living in NYC.

Parking + insurance rates = typical car payment (so doubling the cost of ownership) Not to mention the beating it will take in the city.

I-80, the "northern route" if you hurry and leave soon, weather-wise.

Or, south, grab 1-40 across AZ & NM, into Dallas,TX; out of Dallas
across AK, TN, etc. to I-81 north, to I-80 into Gotham City.

I'm with the posters above: unless your new deal comes with very
secure/paid-for parking and you are going to "mobile" in the greater
NYC area, I'd store or sell your X; if you are really working "in the City",
public transportation, an occasional car rental, or at worst, a local beater
to keep.

If you're living upstate and will commute, do so by train of course but keep your X you will need it. :thumbup:

I moved from SF Bay Area to NY --- I work in NY but live in CT. My company paid for the move.

I would suggest you look into shipping both your truck and your stuff. My family's stuff, including one vehicle, was loaded into a moving van along with four other family's goods. Your truck would probably go on a transporter though.

Brian, was the stuff and the car delivered with no damage? How much did it cost you and how long did it take? Do you have a shipping company name/number?

ship it. under $1000 for sure. i have this one company shipped my car (not the x) from sounthern california to virginia (but i have to pick it up in maryland) for $750 and that was some time ago.
