X5 Died on Freeway today~!
Driving along, everything's great then I noticed the battery symbol was lit up... a few minutes later the X was dead. My X5 is no stranger to the tow truck... again we took a ride on a flatbed. It seems my alternator went south? :dunno: Also the "trans failsafe" msg appeared on the MID  Battery is about 8 months old.

Dam dude that must suck. Was there anything strange out the ordinary that lead up to the dead alternator? I surely would like to avoid problem like that. Once again i love your car.

Sounds like the alternator. Happened to me in March. Same "Fail Safe" message. Had it towed to dealership & they fixed it under my CPO.

it is the alternator for sure. i already posted what happened when my wife was driving home and all of the suddent everything went dead but ABS, Faisafe, battery symbols all lit up. she was too scared to continue driving it, she pulled off the shoulder and it couldnt start again. i went to the dealer and had them estimated the cost of replacing the alternator, it was $1200. i decided not to have it replaced, i went to another dealer and they estimated $850, i still thought it was too much for just the alternator. went home bought from pepboy for $200 and have the local indy shop did it for $180 including 2 belts, alternator belt and ac belt. done. the x started fine again and drive like a champ. good luck.

Sorry to hear that Zerochief! Glad to know you were able to pull over safely like NOVAX5's wife when the same thing happened.
Even though it wasn't the alternator, I had my own unexpected incident about 2 years ago while on the road. The fan 'disintegrated' and tore thru the radiator and some belts. I lost all power steering for example going about 80mph on the freeway! After reading this post, I may just share my story on another post. Keep us posted on your alternator problem. I'm sure your X will be like new again. |
Will probably happen to me too. I am at 105,000 miles.
Just glad that there is enough time to pull over |
Thanks everyone... It is the alternator (covered by CPO) and my 8 month old battery is shot. I asked my SR on the phone about replacing it: reply "batteries are not covered" Then I mention the failed alternator caused the battery problem and s/b replaced under the CPO: reply was "only if it's an BMW battery" (its a DieHard)... So I threw in a brand new one right before the flatbed arrived on its way to Steven's Creek BMW. They wanted $400 for the replacement. UPDATE: picked up the X last night... repaired - running great!
