4.6is Tips with Ractive Oval Tips

4 Attachment(s)
alright, i've researched a lot about Ractive tips and 4.6is...

at first i decided to go with Ractive since they are much cheaper and of course easier to install. i ordered them from Autobarn.com, got it in 3 days, but was not that much happy about it...

then i saw x5-4-fighting's X, exchanged PMs with him abt it, got the detailed info that i need, so i decided to return the Ractives and drove to Morristown last saturday to get the 4.6is tips. when i opened the box, i realized why they are way more expensive than Ractives, i mean, the quality is very good, and they are thick... also, i bought Y-pipes from PepBoys... zoom, zoom...

anyway, i took pictures of them side by side and you will see the difference... hopefully, i can get them installed this weekend, just in time for the NJ-GTG...

Yup... The 4.6 tips will look so much better on your X with the Y pipes than those Ractive tips (if I do say so myself.. ). You won't regret the decision!

So how are these 4.6 tips welded onto a 3.0 single tip exhasut.

X5-4fighting, from the back it looks like there are two tips coming out of your 3.0's muffler???

JayX5 11-08-2007 01:55 AM

Also how much do these tips go for from Morrsitown?

Yes- there are two tips coming out from the 3.0 muffler. The 4.6is tips were welded onto the Y pipes I purchased from Pep Boys...

I had my muffler guy cut the slanted/stock tips off, leaving about an inch to weld the Y pipes on to. I didn't need to, but I went ahead and spray painted the inside of the Y pipes a flat black color before I had my muffler guy cut the Y pipes to the right length, too...

*** these are approximate areas where to cut the Y pipes... ... and what they look like when installed...

The key is the Y pipes and finding a good muffler shop and person who will cut the Y pipes, weld them onto the muffler, and then weld the 4.6 tips onto the Y pipes. The place/guy i picked near work is accustomed to working on BMW's, but this was his first attempt on this type of mod on an X5, believe it or not! The tips were just a little crooked on his first attempt, but the guy was such a perfectionist that he took it off once, tweaked it just a little bit until the tips were nice and straight!

The tips aren't cheap (even though our sponsor Morristown BMW sell them at a price no other dealer can beat!). Including installation cost, some people may think it's a bit more than they're willing to pay for "the look", but I wanted it done right. Besides no other tips out there in the market came even close to the OEM 4.6is exhaust look. With the staggered, bigger and wider 20" wheels, the slanted stock exhaust tips looked too wimpy. The 4.6is tips was the way to go for me!

* I have to credit NOVAX5 for the idea. Although he had his muffler guy custom make his Y tips, I just happened to find my Y tips from Pep Boys. To my surprise, they were even a perfect snug fit in diamater within the 4.6 tips. They just needed to be cut and welded into place with the 4.6 tips.

JayX5 11-08-2007 11:35 AM

Wow GREAT work. Really clean installation! BTW, how far did you make the tips extend out?

willam 11-08-2007 12:20 PM

Looks brilliant, nice job!

Bushman2 11-08-2007 12:28 PM

Great Look! Roughly how much were the tips?

Nice job X5-4  Galing!! Pinoy Innovation:thumbup:

Jayjay, I think the OEM 4.6is Tips is the way to go IMHO

Obeticus4.6is 11-08-2007 02:19 PM

Thanks, guys!

JayJay- I hope yours works out for you, too!
BostonX5 - Nope. I didn't need spacers for my 20" wheels. I do know that my gas mileage sucks a bit more now with the bigger wheels (of course)... haha!

blueagle 11-27-2007 08:22 PM

Will be going to a local exhaust shop to convert my hidden 3.0d euro exhaust to the 4.4/4.6 exhaust with oval tips. Stay tuned and will post pics for the benefit of all X5 3.0d euro diesel owners

R6 VENOM 11-27-2007 11:39 PM

Good question. I would love to see how that looks...

Mtech 11-28-2007 01:47 PM

nice job man!

Panoz 11-28-2007 02:45 PM

One issue to consider. The Y-pipes you bought from Pep Boyz are not stainless steel. As such, they will be begin to rust.

Looks nice though!

x2. i have the 4.4i and i want to change the exhaust tips to 4.6is ones... how would i do that?

chigga 06-24-2009 12:43 AM

i'm in the process of doing this shortly... ur current tips have to be cut and then weld on the 4.6is tips. should be very straight forward... i do have a question on whether the bumper needs to be taken off? as i'm also wanting to do a resonator to straight pipe all at once since i'm underneath already

sobi6111 06-24-2009 02:49 AM

What you guys think about that install? Here is a link of exhaust tips I want, cost 350$ but cheap to install. Anyone has installedit yet? Looks same as 4.6 ?

sobi, looks like what they did is modify the RActive tips (see post #1) to look like 4.6is tips, close but not quite... and too expensive...
