Just got a Check Coolant Level on my Dash.... Is it safe to add non bmw products or do I have to really go to stealership?

It's fine, use a name brand coolant and you will be fine. Make sure whatever you use is compatible with all forms of coolant (there is some discussion about how certain coolants don't gel together).
