Diesel vibration on Steering wheel
 

How much vibration @ idle should I feel through the steering wheel? I own a 2006 3.0d never noticed it for the first couple of days but now I have I can't remember if it was present before I had the car tuned. Having it tuned shouldn't make any difference as in theory nothing is touched at idle only when the revs hit about 1300 onwards

I drive an 02 E53 X5 3.od euro. I have not encountered such type of vibration in the steering wheel except at high speed. I was able to resolve it thru proper balancing and alignment of my 19" tires and rims.

In your case, if the engine is causing the vibration. I would suspect the engine support and rubber bushings which help minimize vibration . Even the engine dampers should also be checked. This is a common problem in many diesel engines.

'05 Diesel Sport. Has had vibration through the steering wheel at idle from the day I picked it up. It is enough to cause a secondary buzz somewhere else in the dash, but disappears when rev's are away from idle.
By tuned, do you mean you had the chip remapped? If so, are you happy with the results?

Thanks fatboyoz, if your saying your 05 vibrates enough to cause a secondary buzz elsewhere then mine must be as it was before being chipped.

The difference is like day and night my friend the power is now 254BHP, I'm not the sort of person who hammers a car in fact I drive like an old lady, now the car just pulls away without haveing to floor the accelerator the turbo spins up and cuts in from about 1300 so turbo lag is practically gone and because of the way I drive the economy has shot up aswell. basically when I press the accelerator I'm no longer waiting for the car to move or catchup.

Sounds good. What brand of chip upgrade did you go for? Can you give me a website? Been thinking of doing the same thing myself, but not all that easy to find someone who has actually done it.

I have a 2005 3.0d with 35k miles. No vibration at all through the steering wheel. Past BMW diesel experience says:
1) If it's worse at start up and until the engine warms, you may have lost one or more glow plugs;
2) If it's just bad all the time, there could be some imbalance in the engine management - possibly worn injectors, dodgy mass flow, partially blocked air filter - that kind of stuff;
3) Blueeagle's comments ring true also - it only needs one mount to have given up to cause a disproportionate racket/vibration.

Moments, thanks for the reply do you not get any vibration? I'm not talking about a rattle, it is more like a vibration., if it were bad injectors or mass flow I'd probablt notice something while driving. I guess I need to compare it to another.

Any 3.0d facelift drivers from SW London that may be able to meet? put my mind at rest
